    1. [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Re: Searching for my Creek Ancestors
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5R.2ADI/248.316 Message Board Post: We are distant cousins, as I am also a descendant of the Kirklands. I assume your William Kirkland was William Riley Kirkland, who was born in SC in 1814 and died in Henry Co., Alabama. And yes, many of the Kirklands moved to Alabama around the same time. Moses Kirkland was from another branch of the family, descended from Benjamin Kirkland, whereas William was descended from Benjamin's older brother, Aaron. William Riley Kirkland did serve in the Indian was of 1846 under Jackson, but I don't have anything on Moses being a spy for Andrew Jackson or being called Leg-A-Walking. William Riley Kirkland's son-in-law, Williiam Green Locke, was very tall, 6'2". It has not been confirmed that Alcey Odom Kirkland was Creek, but she could have been. She came from an area around the Meherrin Indian Town in what was Chowan Co., North Carolina. My grandfather, whose mother was Emma Jane Locke Henderson, daughter of William Green Locke and Melvina Kirkland (her dad was William Riley) told me that we were part Creek and for the past year I have been trying to confirm that. Dr. Peacock did extensive research on both the Lock and Kirkland families and was unable to confirm the family tradition that Melvina was of Creek descent. I have the books he wrote on those respective families. So there is a persistant and strong family tradition for Creek descent, and in fact another posting said that Allcey was Creek and Catawba. I have posted a reply to her, and will e-mail her as well. I am more than willing to share any information I have, so feel free to contact me.
