Today I went to a family reunion and was talking about our past (and passed) relatives. When I mentioned my g grandmother, Paraline Parmer, one of the older cousins said, "Oh, the Creek Indian woman...". I was speechless for a few moments but then picked her brain for everything she could remember, which turned out to be very little except that Paraline was indeed Creek (not a princess, BTW) and was from Randolph Co. Alabama. She married my g grandfather, William Thomas Whitley and had a houseload of kids. After all these years I have been writing about the Creek Indians and wishing I could claim at least some blood ties, I think I may have found some. The search is on!!! MVTO Phil Whitley

So far the book of my family that has been put together has info on it about our blood lines. Instead of my line descending from James B. I'm registered with the "Creek Nation East of the Mississippi" currently headquartered in Oklahoma. Thanks for the name of the tribe Elizabeth English is said to come from. In exchange, I'll give you a few bits of information about researching Nahoga Moniac / Nancy Knight. 1) There are original source documents that show that Nahoga Moniac WAS fathered by William Dixon Moniac, a Dutch fur-trapper, and a Creek maiden named Polly Colbert (her baptismal name, NOT her Indian one). 2) Following the Creek Indian Wars, the Indian territory (GA, FL, AL) was divided up between the evangelical dominations. The Methodists claimed Alabama as their "mission field". As their traveling preachers made converts among the Indian tribes, they baptized the new believers and gave each a new "Christian" name. Some of the Indians went by their new names and some stayed with their original names. 3) No church record has yet been discovered that tells when Nahoga Moniac (documented as a real person) morphed into Nancy Knight (if, in fact, she ever did). Be advised that those roving Methodist preachers were meticulous record-keepers and reports of their work among the various Indian tribes were sent back to their headquarters on a regular basis. That's all the help I can offer you. Good luck in your search for your family origins. Vickey Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. James Benjamin Ward being one who is mentioned in there that he married Elizabeth English Ward of the Harjo-Boggas parrot band of creek. That's all it says really and that info came from a cousin named Dr. Andrew Boggs Ramsey who is or was a council member on the eastern tribe of Creek indians...I have been through pins and needles trying to get in contact with him or a son...but it has been hard. For my line in the Ward family is John Ward and Nancy Knight--Elijah Ward and Sarah Cochran--William Marion Ward and Katie Campell--William Peter Ward and Clairsey Ann Bolton--Farriew Ward and Lizzie Harvard--William "Howard" Ward and Irene Ward--Mary Anne, my mom, then us. Our info that was gathered concentrates on that line...Do you know Ottis or Lois Ward?? Or how about a young lady by the name of Angel Ward? And would you by any chance know anything about Dr. Andrew Boggs Ramsey? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have U.S. Census records for James B WARD from 1860 all the way back to 1800 as a 4-year-old in the home of his parents, Nathan F & Elizabeth WARD in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Both the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses state that James was born in South Carolina. So, my question remains . . . What "church records", "last wills and testaments", "family Bible records", "birth, marriage, and/or death records", or any _other_ "official documents" are in your "family book" (or in your or some other family member's possesion) that PROVE a _different_ parentage for James B WARD? I, too, know who my WARD family was, however, MY family lineage is based upon the aforementioned legal documents (and YES, "church records" and "family Bible records" ARE considered LEGAL DOCUMENTS in a U.S. court of law) as well as, military service records, Bureau of Land Office records, and Bureau of Indian Affairs records held by the National Archives & Records Administration (NARA). I know that James B & Elizabeth WARD had the following grandsons: William Josiah, William Madison, William Jasper, and William Dennis. No William Howard, though. Who was your great-grandfather? Family FABLES are seldom family FACTS. For example, my maternal grandmother always referred to her grandfather as "Colonel" and told me that he was with General Robert Edward Lee at Appomattox Court House. Those were my family FABLES, however, after perusing NARA's digitized Civil War records through FootNote.com, I discovered that my great-great-grandfather never rose above the rank of 2nd Lieutenant AND, just last week, I found his "Parole of Prisoners ... surrendered by Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, to Lt. Gen. U.S. Grant ... done at Appomattox Court House, Vriginia, April 9, 1865." So, careful research of original source documents corrected one family fable and confirmed another. All I seek is confirmation. Thank you. The Tama Tribal Town is located at 107 Lone Pine Drive Whigham, GA - that is just outside Cairo, GA The Perdido Bay Tribe manages a large ecological preserve near Pensacola, FL that contains a very nice cultural heritage museum which is open to the public. Contact information is at _www.perdidobaytribe.org_ (http://www.perdidobaytribe.org) I don't think that the Eufaula Star Clan has a museum facility, but someone on this message board may want to correct me. -----Original Message----- From: Sehoy Daughter-of-the-Wind Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2010 12:51 AM To: creek-southeast@rootsweb.com Subject: BUTLER I am researching the lineage of Jesse BUTLER who married into the SE Creek. Sehoy, daughter of the wind -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the beginning, the Muscogee people were born out of the earth itself. They crawled up out of the ground through a hole like ants. In those days, they lived in a far western land beside tan mountains that reached the sky. They called the mountains the back- bone of the earth. Then a thick fog de- scended upon the earth, sent by the Master of Breath, Esaki- taummesee. The Muscogee people could not see. They wandered around blindly, calling out to one another in fear. They drifted apart and became lost. The whole peo- ple were separated into small groups, and these groups stayed close to one another in fear of being entirely alone. Finally, the Master had mercy on them. From the east- ern edge of the world, where the sun rises, he began to blow away the fog. He blew and blew until the fog was complete- ly gone. The people were joyful and sang a hymn of thanksgiving to the Master of Breath. And in each of the groups, the people turned to one another and swore eternal brotherhood. They said that from then on these groups would be like large families. The members of each group would be as close to each other as brother and sister, father and son. The group that was farthest east and first to see the sun, praised the wind that had blown the fog away. They called themselves the Wind Family, or Wind Clan. As the fog moved away from the other groups, they, too, gave themselves names. Each group chose the name of the first animal it saw. So they became the Bear, Deer, Alligator, Raccoon, and Bird Clans. However, the Wind Clan was always considered the first clan and the aristo- cracy of all the clans. The Master- of-Breath spoke to them: "You are the beginning of each one of your fami- lies and clans. Live up to your name. Never eat of your own clan, for it is your brother. You must never marry into your own clan. This will destroy your clan if you do. When an Indian brave marries, he must al- ways move with his wife to her clan. There he must live and raise his family. The children will become members of their mother's clan. Follow these ways and the Muskhogeans will always be a powerful force. When you forget, your clans will die as people."
I lost email from someone asking about her possible Creek relatives buried at St. John Cemetery in Bonifay, FL. Her last email asked about Malinda Ella Fere Anderson Dean. She is my grandmother. I attempted to answer, but mail was through Ancestry.com; to which I don't belong. Somehow I lost this query. I think this woman might have ancestors who were Weeks, registered Florida Creeks. With each wife, the less the first wife had to work as the new wives had to do the harder labor. Mainly because during the war of 1813--14 approximately 75% of the Creek Indian warriors were killed, - another war about 1836 killed more males so there after Creek Indian males were not abundant.
