    1. Re: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Indian Traders names
    2. myself
    3. Debra, I found mine in a Genealogy list. Try like you would your other SUR names. My name was new when i found it and no one had heard of him in bibles or churches and no land deeds with his name on it so this got my to thinking that he was indeed a criminal and stayed hid all the years until he was finally caught and shot. Then i sent this to the list hoping others can find some of their hidden names. The best thing i can say to do is, Think of anyway new way to find the roots. It pays off Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deborah Woolf" <woolfpac@PRODIGY.NET> To: <CREEK-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 31, 2003 7:54 PM Subject: Re: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Indian Traders names Bob, how do we look these up? 3. RW, The way i got the picture of this is, All are listed that are known Indian Traders. Good point you bring out and I can go back to the url and look around for more information but do sorta feel this list tells us that these names listed were documented to be legal Indians traders. I didn't send the punishment some got for illegal trading such as guns and other illegal sale of STOLEN goods from the ARMIES. That part was sorta away from the main subject and didn't want to distract from Gen/roots too much at that time. Thanks for bringing out that good point. ole Bob

    3. The books on the Indian Traders from the Journal of Commissioners of Indian Trade are very difficult to get. They are currently out of print. You can do research at the South Carolina Archives. They are suppose to be coming out with an on-line index as of yesterday. If you do a search with a search engine, search with the following topic to bring up the Archives. 3. When I visited Ft. Mims site in the early 70's it was rather overgrown and bushy-I walked over the area quite well-didn't hear any drums or war whoops-although it was a steaming hot and humid day. The ghost thing now-there are such stories about Stones River Battlefield in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as well as many other Civil War sites-there would be ample reason for such at these huge hallowed blood repositories, if such existed---. I should tend to agree with the latter portion of the "ghost story" where it begins to question the so called "massacre", perhaps it is a "massacre in the sense that the vain and arrogant Custer and his men were "massacred"-an Indian victory. All that I have studied down through the years indicates that Weatherford lost control early on and when the men of the wilderness had their blood lust up, there was no controlling them. The Fort Commander was apparently greatly at fault. Red Eagles grave is near Little River as I recall-it was located in the edge of farm land well marked 30 plus years back. The "ghost story" indicates that when Red Eagle surrendered to Jackson that it was over-well to a great extent-but if one plys through a bit of history of South Alabama, South East Georgia, and Northwest Florida, you will discover the Creeks weren't finished with White Folks for many more years. Then there was the half breed young Creek boy named Powell-a refugee of the Creek wars-later to do his part for White perfidy-as the Seminole Osceola. A good book of fictional history-but with all the players on a grand scale-about William Weatherford is "Horseshoe Bend" by Bruce Palmer and John Clifford Giles, Simon and Schuster 1962. The numbers killed at Ft. Mims was less than that at the Battle of the Monogahela near Fort Duquesne Pennsylvania in 1755, when a variety of allied Indians, a few French and Canadians laid waster to perhaps 950-1000 British Soldiers and allies. Among those that escaped with their lives were two men scheduled for future playing on the United States history stage, George Washington and Daniel Boone. ----- Original Message ----- From: myself <bobandgwen2@comcast.net> To: <CREEK-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 3:48 PM Subject: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] New today 29 Jan 03 > This url paints quite a story about Fort Mim's. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CORNPLANTER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5R.2ADI/941 Message Board Post: New CORNPLANTER mailing list on Rootsweb. This mailing list is for the CORNPLANTER surname and associated lines, regardless of tribal affiliation. We've found that some people assume, based on oral family tradition or info they picked up on the internet, that their Cornplanter ancestor was either Seneca (Iroquois/Haudenosaunee) or Cherokee, Creek, etc. and were missing information on their particular family. By bringing the people together, we hope to not only find our family members, but help people connect their ancestor to the correct native tribe. If you are new to Native American genealogy research, please check out the "how-to" articles on the listowner's personal website: http://www.angelfire.com/tx/carolynegenealogy If you are new to genealogy research, feel free to sign up for the free basic genealogy course at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yahoo-cls-basicgenealogy/ Good luck and happy tree climbing to everyone!
