    1. [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Henderson, Welker, Bigham
    2. I am trying to find information on my Grandmother and her family. My GGgrandmother-Louisa Bigham was full blooded Creek. They had registered on the Dawes Rolls, but the names disappeared. We have original documents from The Secretary Of The Interior, dated 1903, concerning this. Some of the other people that registered at the same time were given their land. I have read up on this process and do understand how this could happen. Anyway, I would like anything on Louisa Bigham, Kattie (Welker) Henderson. I have found where they are buried and visited the graves, but know next to nothing about them or their families, or where they came from. Any help would be appreciated. My Grandmothers name was Sarah Vestie Henderson b April 1900.Her Mother was Kattie Welker Henderson.Kattie married John Henderson and lived in Oklahoma. Kattie had 3 brothers- Charlie, Ed and I don't remember the other one. Thanks Bea

Hoping to find a link.. Was wondering if you had any more details on descendants of the Wiggins-Blackshear family link? My grandfather, Alonzo Wiggins, was mulatto. His father was Caucasian (I don't know his name) Alonzo married Annie Blackshear, in Macon, GA (Bibb County), circa 1910. One of his sons was Nonie Wiggins (my father). Another son from a previous marriage was Thomas Wiggins. Believe Alonzo had a brother named Nonie (who my father was named after, I believe.) Thanks, Mikki (Carole Wiggins) Ware

    3. I don't know what Thompson this might be, but I'm interested in an Amon H. Thompson who married my great grandmother Sarah Spear's sister, Nancy Spear. I believe that Sarah and Nancy Spear's mother, Sarah Ridley, at least, was part Creek. The Thompsons lived in Thomas County, Georgia, but also in Hamilton and Alachula counties in Florida from time to time. Amon joined the 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment in the Confederate Army in Thomasville during the war, but was very soon discharged as disabled. I believe that these Thompsons had children, but I don't have any names. 3. Another family researcher contacted me recently with the names of two Thompson children born in GA about 1879. He wondered if the children's first names (Leuchamp and Senchany) suggested Creek roots. Several family stories or legends relate to some type of Native American intermarriage earlier in the 1800s. I wondered if anyone on this list had run across before these or similar Creek names. Based on their location, Creek linkages seem somewhat more probable, but Cherokee or other tribal roots might be possible. Thanks for any reactions from those of you more knowledgeable on Creek language and culture. --- Steve

I think theres something in all of them for anyone interested in the history of the Southeastern Indian tribes. In no particular order : Mixed blood Indians, Racial Construction in the Early South by Theda Perdue, Univ. of Georgia Press, 2003. The McGillivray and McIntosh Traders on the Old Southwest Frontier, 1716-1815, by Amos J. Wright, Jr., New South Books, 2001. The Indian Slave Trade : the Rise of the English Empire in the American South, 1670-1717, by Alan Gallay, Yale Univ. Pr., 2003. The only one I've had a chance to read cover to cover is the book by Theda Perdue & its very good & not very long. The other 2 are much longer & have good indexes & large bibliographies. I hope to get through them in the next couple of weeks. By the way is the Gallay book on Indian Slavery the first book just devoted to that subject. I know I've seen other books on slavery with a chapter or a few pages on the subject. Gotta get to work, Marcie

    1. [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Arthur C. Bagsby
    2. My great, great grandfather, Arthur C. Bagsby, (white) may have been an Indian Trader in southern Alabama.  His wife, my great great grandmother was full blood Creek, her maiden name was Rebecca Davis.  Both of them died when my great grandmother, Mollie Bagsby was quite young.  Probably in the late 1860s.  I don't know where either of them were buried, but one of my cousins who has since died said that Arthur Bagsby was buried in a cemetery north of Mobile.  Does anyone know anything about them?  Thank you for any information. Sincerely, Elaine McKenzie (oemckenzie@aol.com)

She died at something like 100 years of age and as buried at Bethel United Methodist Church at Reno, Grady County, Georgia, as Abigail Merritt, wife of Parson (Richard) Jonathan Merritt. She was from North Carolina, possibly Robeson County, as was her husband (my 3-great grandfather) Richard Welch. So far as I know, they lived most of their adult lives in Thomas County, Georgia, where there were quite a few Blackshears among the early settlers. However, I have no idea whether Blackshear was her maiden name and she had also previously married a Gill, or what. I have suspicions that somewhere among the Welches there was Indian ancestry but I have no specific information other than a Confederate enrollment record showing one of her sons to be rather dark, and a photo of her daughter who was my 2-great grandmother, Martha Ann Welch Haven. You can see her photo at: http://pone.com/ts/rw001.htm ! If you right-click on the photo and choose "view image" a larger version of her photo should appear. In the unlikely event that anyone can place Abigail amongst the Blackshears, I would love to hear about it... <G>
