Prehaps the "white family" recorded features on the property (tax records) in the courthouse in that area. I would also search the web for the "u.s. geological survey" for that area, and also if you haven't already get a copy of the county map from that state's department of transportation. Get the map with the largest scale ratio; if will have more detail. Much success in your investigation. Kenny Kenny

Surnames: Gilmore Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5R.2ADI/75.355.419.642.1 Message Board Post: My reply is to the Gilmore surname. I have a mystery I am trying to solve. Here in Greene County, Pa, on the PA / WV border, in Gilmore Township, is the Gilmore Cemetery, white folks. Actually, the cemetery may just be located in WV. There are some black Gilmore in the county, or there were in years past. The mystery? The Gilmore cemetery stones are ones that probably cost a pretty sum in those days. About 25 feet south of the Gilmore markers, is a large fieldstone sitting upright with several small field stones placed around it ... similar, in my opinion, to the placement of the Gilmore stones. Is this just a random placement of fieldstones? Or could it be another cemetery, possibly of colored folk? Slaves, former slaves, runaway slaves, free people of color...people who might not have had the money to purchase tombstones. Questions that come to mind: Is it a graveyard? Who would be buried there? Since the location is south of the PA border, is it possible these Gilmore own! ed slaves? Or owned and freed their slaves? Or, since there were black Gilmore/Gilmere in the county, could there be another possible answer? Not all slaves in Greene County were registered. We can find black people almost appearing from nowhere. Runaways, possibly. Freed slaves we were not aware of, possibly. Black folk who one day were slaves, and the next day were not slaves...possibly. The gradual abolition of slavery. This message is to say there were African American Gilmores in Greene County, PA but where did they come from? Not sure if there might have been an Indian connection.

As I said, the Etheridge line is well known. That is the first time I have seen the information presented in quite that form, though. If it exists in a publication that you know of I would appreciate a citation of source. My line from Nancy Mackey/Robert Ridley, Sr. is less known; and from their daughter Sarah Ridley... not known at all so far as I am aware. The reason for this is probably pretty simple. When Sarah Ridley married Allen Spear they almost immediately relocated to Thomas County, Georgia. Thanks Richard White Tallahassee, Florida
Hello Richard & Randall, The courthouse in Irwinton, Wilkinson Co., Ga. burned 4 or 5 times throughout the years so many records were lost. I began my research based on a sheet of paper written by a deceased relative who went to the courthouse. In the early 60's Brook's health had already declined too much to have made the trip to Irwinton so I know this info was written earlier. His wife is now 94 and her memory is still pretty good but she couldn't remember anymore details. Since I still haven't figured out jpeg etc. to get my scanner to copy this I will type it out. Early Ancestry of Otto Etheridge Sr. Early English and Indian History taken from the Census Bureaus of Indian Affairs show that in 1741 William G. Mackey and family came to America from Scotland and settled 2 1/2 miles east of what is now Toombsboro, Ga. on Indian land. They are buried 2 miles east of Toombsboro in Mackey Cemetary. A son ,W.G. Mackey was married to Hop'EE Micah, a daughter of Indian chief Hopie Micah a daughter Hopey Mackey married Merret L. Etheridge who came from Wales to America when 14 years of age. children of Merrett & Hopey Etheridge Merrett E. Etheridge wife, Lucy Kingery Twins Tabitha- married Archibald Hooks Demoris- married John K. Wheeler Lucious Flournoy Etheridge-1834-1908 married Winnie Branan, sister of his 1st wife Elizabeth Ann. ________________________________________________________ Make of this what you will. I've gone to the courthouse but so many records were destroyed that there's not much information to find. However in the land office records the map shows a cemetary at the right place to be the Mackey cemetary and also has labeled an Indian burial ground between the next cemetary (Stephen's) and the town of Toombsboro. I talked to someone who has been to the cemetary and he said that there are no markers and no one knew who was buried there. If the information I have is correct that would make the Mackey's the first settlers of Toombsboro. William G. Mackeys occupation was Indian trader. They lived in the Blount County Alabama area. My great great grreat grandfather was an infant, who was left behind when Jackson made all the creeks go the trail of tears...( that's what I'm told) He was raised by a family with the last name of Butler... I would like to know his mothers name, his fathers name, and so forth, yet no one seems to know any info. Can anyone find a story, a tale, something that would coincide with this? I dont' know if the lady survived the journey, if she had other kids, if Mr butler was the father of the infant, or if the Butler family simply took him in and adopted him to spare him possible death, or what... I know all the creeks were removed, and sent to Oklahoma. But I dont have a name for her or anything. I believe my great great great grandfathers first name was John. I do know he took the name Butler from the family who kept him. I THINK, he married a half-creek woman named Sally.. I dont' know how it goes from there to me, except that my Grandmother carried the creek blood, then my father, and now me... though heavily diluted by now.. No, we are not registered. My grandmother hid her status. My father didnt' register. I apparently dont' have enough creek blood to be considered, even IF registry were possible. I would like to know the real story though, of why an infant was left behind, and his mother sent off, to possibly die on the way.. and what happened to her, if she made it, if she had children, etc...

Good Morning all, Well, The response I got from my letter below was really outstanding. All were very supportive of the letter and I feel they will pass on the dangers of swimming regardless where the water is located. This assures me that my time spent writing the letter was well worth the effort. Seing others lose their lives in the Gulf prompted me to write and send. I did receive one letter that had a bit of scolding content within. The lady was a bit vrbal and told me. Why did you sent this letter long ago? That was a good one and I smile and apologized to her. Thank you all for your kind support. Ole Bob in Fla To all, Please accept this letter as a bit of protection for the future of our Genealogy. This letter is not to be crude but to give you a bit of information that may save someones life. If someone finds this not necessary to send to a Gen list, Please jump me to my e-mail address and not to a list. I can take your gripes and will just apologize and hope that you may never need this swimming tip which may save yours or family members life while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. Ouch, That closing hurts doesn't it? Facts from this weekend This past weekend, The lives of 6 people were lost due to the undercurrents or better known as "RIP TIDES" found in the Gulf of Mexico. These drownings occured from Panama City, Fla to Pensacola, Fla. Pleae read on the net about the Undercurrent and write our beach Chamber of commerce or the Panama City beach Police Dept for excellent material about the "RIP TIDES" They are very anxious to tell all about the danger of the tides and what causes these. This is not a regular tide that EBBS and FLOWS one or two times a day. For your safety, I will not explain how this Rip Tide forms. It is best for you to obtain the approved information and go from there. I have pulled a husband and wife from the Gulf when the Rip Tide swept them about 40 feet off shore in a matter of seconds. These two people sit on the beach for a long time crying about their almost drowning. They were extremely tired from fighting the undercurrent. The wife was sinking and I got under her and pushed myself to the surface as fast as I could and sorta threw her almost out of the current. And then swam to the husband who had only his face out of the water. he was going under and the fast current would have swept him further out and he would have drowned. The beaches have flags of warnings out and one should obey the flag warnings and stay out of the water. There are patrols on most of the beaches but they can't be everywhere so its up to you to stay out of the water when these flags are on display. Please read this closely and get more information about this dangerous fast moving water. Water weighs 8.35 pounds per gallon. 1 cube of water is heavier than your car. If you do come to our area, Panama City Beach Fla, Call me and I will help you get all the informaton about this "RIP TIDE" available and will be more than happy to go to the beach and show you where these start stary and why. Hope I didn't get to rough explaining this but I feel it may open someones eyes and may save their life. Closing; If this letter saves lives, Your future families can do "GENEALOGY"of you and future additions to your family and ofcourse YOU. Right on Hermie! I have very special friend on one of thee lists that use our beaches with her Husband and two wonderful almost grown children and the first thing I preach to her is WATCH THE FLAGS.
