    3. DNA Hi Great Creek list, Hope someone can share some light on this. ole Bob Is there anyone on this list descended from Sehoy? I'm interested in identifying Native American's using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) which is passed from a woman to her children. Because everybody gets it from their mother, men have it too but they can't pass it on to their children. Those children always get it from their mother. So that is my problem. I want to find a straight female line going all the way back to a known Creek Indian woman. Does anybody fit that particular genealogy? Sending for Grant Johnston

    1. [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] 190 Mounds and 5 Talking Beach Trees in Cobb Co GA
    2. Dorothy
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dorothy Subject: 190 Mounds and 5 Talking Beach Trees in Cobb Co GA May I forward to another list? Dorothy >>>----------------------------------> ----- Original Message ----- From: The Warrior GA osiyo Yesterday was spent in the area of Allatoona Town and Sand Town and also the Pine Mountain areas of what is now Cobb County Ga near the county lines of Paulding and Bartow. This area is located just SE of the Etowah Mounds site in Bartow County, not more that 5-10 miles. I was called by Reese Cornelius, a resident of the area, who is of Creek and Cherokee heritage, about a piece of property that has just been put up for sale for Residential and Commercial development. This track of land follows the course of Alltoona Creek for about 3 to 4 miles on both sides. It is the results of several generations of families who live there and married and the land passing down until on lady owned it all and she just recently died. Reese is one of the named in the will among others. The property will be sold, and is in control of the estate admin at this point. There are close to 300 acres. On this tract of land are app. 190 stone pile mounds from the Woodland or early Mississippian period and some possibly form the historic period. These mounds are from the size of about 40' L x 12-15' w x 4-5' h to the size that would have been an infant, or about 3 foot round. These mounds occur in clusters and are scattered over the entire tract. Some of this land was farmed and terraces we constructed. In these areas we find the mounds mostly in tact, but some disturbance has been done to some. But it appears that the owners, for the most part farmed around them. Other clusters are in area that we not farmed at all and for the most part remain intact. Some have been looted. Most likely cause of the looted is the presents of five Talking Beach Trees along the creek. There trees all are still living and I measured them to be from 8.5 feet in circumference to almost 10.5 feet in circumference. I have photo documented these as well as taking GPS reading of them and the mounds. Altogether, I took about 90 photos of both the carvings, mounds, "V" trees, "Knee" trees and several extremely large White oaks near 12 feet in circumference and a few Cucumber trees, which are getting to be pretty rare around these parts. Also found was a hill that had the top flattened off and levelled off flat in the shape of a large circle. It is surrounded by mounds. This circle is just up the hill from the creek. And very close to tree of the Beech trees. About ten or so miles away is Kennesaw Mtn and Battlefield. Reese took me along a road between the two properties. All along this road he pointed out more of these mound, sometime them being in peoples front yards. He also pointed out several in the Park at Kennesaw Mtn. We then drove about 2 miles over to Brushy Mtn, where he fought a battle about some graves in the 1980's with Cobb county when the county wanted to build a Water Tower. While he did manage to save a good many graves there, 15 where lost at that time to the construction of the Tower. I have newspaper articles and copies of the letters he sent at that time. Archeological studies at that time confirmed that these stone piles where in fact burials. Yesterday I took pics of graders and dozers destroying the area right across the street form the Historical marker. I was also given pics of the same area that shows it in the 1980's. While it does appear that the known pile have not been touched, it was difficult to be sure from where our observation point was. Resse believed that it is likely they are some being destroyed. We walked the woods behind a house just across the street and were shown several mounds that are part of the same complex and across the other street at this intersection he pointed out quite a few other mounds. These mounds near Brushy Mtn and those at the Alltoona Creek are in extreme danger form being destroyed due to construction. Reese and I have agreed to also go look at three additional Beech Trees at other sites in Cobb. Reese also made me aware that there are several of these Trees in AL that where in Creek areas there. Reese also gave me another book called "Silent Wings" by Eugene Croy about the Trees and other legends. Croy, along with Forrest Wade and J.C. Gazaway are the three men that looked at the trees in Forysth county that we just recently lost our efforts to save from destruction. Croy and Wade wrote books about the trees and Gazaway built the museum that I have mentioned before that is on Franklin Gold Mine Road in Forsyth CO GA. Gazaway has passed, as have the others, but I understand that the museum is still opened on the weekends and staffed by friends of his family. One a side note, I learned of something that I did not know. After the Delaware were run out of their homeland, many joined in the Six Nations. But there was one band that choose to come south and settled in the Pine Mtn area in Cobb County, where they were living as Cherokee's at the time of the Removal and the TOT. Does anyone have any history about this band? Edward Reynolds. Save a grave, it could be your own!

    1. [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Re: Jeremiah Garrett
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Garrett, Miller, King, Simmons, Barthold, Stryker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5R.2ADI/198.2 Message Board Post: I just found your query about Jeremiah - I too am searching for his parents, but thought you might be interested in what I have gleaned about him from several sources: Sometime during the years 1809-1820 Jeremiah Garrett, with other members of his family, came into Wilkinson County, Georgia, from Edgefield Co., South Carolina. The family was, prior to that time, probably in North Carolina. Jeremiah's first wife, Annie Miller, died in South Carolina (probably GA), leaving ten children. All of them accompanied their father into Wilkinson County, where several of them married and lived for many years. Their names were: Enoch, b. 1795; Elijah; Elisha; John Israel; Mary; Tabita; Samuel; Nancy Ann; James; Robert. Jeremiah Garrett did not live long in the county after his second marriage, which occurred August 15, 1822, to Mary King; he, with his wife and younger children, moved to Alabama, settling in Pike County at Josie, AL, on the Pea River. A group of Wilkinson County families including Garretts, Merediths, Browns, Mathews and others left about the same time and went to Pike County, AL. Several of Jeremiah's descendants are still to be found in that locality. The next census record for Jeremiah Garrett was in Pike County in 1830. He had 5 boys and 5 girls and wife on this census. Jeremiah started farming. By 1835 he had cleared land, built his cabin, and increased his stock until he could sell enough to buy land. He was ready to get his first 40 acres of land from the government on a land grant. Recorded at Pike County Courthouse Deed Book A-1323-52 on page 159 - Jeremiah Garrett to Stokely M. Evans. State of Alabama - Pike County - Know all men by these present that I,Jeremiah Garrett, of the county and state aforesaid have bargained, sold, and delivered and by these presents do bargain, sell, and delivers unto Stokely M. Evans for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and six the following property, to wit, one yoke oxen and cart, twenty head of cattle, and forty two head of hogs and eighteen head of sheep, the right and title of siad described property I, the said Jeremiah Garrett, do warrent and forever defend unto the said Stokely M. Evans, his heirs and assigns for ever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 27th day of January 1835. Test John D. Curtis Jeremiah X Garrett Record at Pike County courthouse show that on November 5, 1836, Jeremiah Garrett got 40 acres of land in Section 6; Township 10 N.; Range 24 E. This land was in the SW 1/4 of NE 1/4. The certificate on Warrant No. 4561. Records show that John Garrett, Elijah Garrett, Robert Garrett, Henry J. and William D. Garrett also got land from between then and 1854. Some of Jeremiah Garrett's neighbors were Abraham Miles, Commissioner of the town of Monticello and later a Judge, John D. Curtis, Clerk of County Court at Monticello, and others were Robert Love, Isaac Griffin, John W. Brown and James Evans. >From "History of Pike County" by M. P. Farmer: "1836 Battle of Hobdy Bridge" "There had been several skirmishes between the whites and Indians. At 3 Notch near Union Springs, at least 3 persons were killed and scalped by Indiana. The Indians had been raiding and burning homes and Capt. Wellborn had gone to investigate. The Indians, who were in ambush, caught the white men in an open field and opened fire. After this the Indians went to the Pea River Swamp for protection. No Indian villages ever existed within the present confines of Pike County. The presence of arrowheads in the county in bountiful supply bears testimony to the fact that Indians traveled through and hunted in the county." Jeremiah Garrett was killed by the Indians on the Pea River in Pike County, AL. The story goes that 'Jerry,' leaving his plow-stock and a pair of horses in the field, returned later to find them gone. Suspecting this to be the work of Indians, he obtained the assistance of neighbors to join in a search. The Indians, however, who were lying in ambush, overpowered them. Jeremiah was scalped and his body pinned to a tree. Quoting from Mr. J.T. Garrett, of Charing, Taylor, Ga (1930): The proof I have of these statements concerning Jeremiah Garrett and his family is this: Dates, etc., are to be found in our family Bible; many things I have remembered, and others were told to me by my cousins, Rev. Jasper J. Brooks and Lura Garrett (daughter of Samuel Garrett and his wife, Isabella Anderson). Lura, who is doubley kin to me (having married my elder brother, Isaac William Garrett), lived with her husband in Taylor County near her father-in-law and uncle, Enoch Garrett (my grandfather). Naturally she learned a great deal about the Garretts from both sides." {The dates and places in this article may be more correct than those found on the website. Some of the children may have been born in SC , but in AL censuses John says he was born in GA. Enoch is said to be the oldest son and b. in 1795 so was probably not born in Wilkinson Co. if they came between 1809-1820. If Robert was born 10 July 1822, then Jeremiah married just a few weeks after his first wife died. Need to check 1850 census for place of birth for all the children. AL} >From Mary Garrett Gullatte: "Jeremiah Garrett was born about 1774. The first facts so far on Jeremiah Garrett are found in Wilkinson County, Georgia in 1820. Sometime after 1808, Jeremiah, John and Robert Garrett and their families came to Wilkinson County. County records show that Robert Garrett was coroner there in 1811, and he left a will naming his family. John Garrett did not marry and was later listed on census records as a wheelwright. Church records for Mt. Nebo Church, which was organized in 1808, show Anna Garrett and Shadrack Adams as members. Also records kept at Beall & Patterson store lists names of settlers who traded with them on credit. Some of the names were Enoch Garrett (son of Jeremiah) and wife, John Garrett, who was not married, Miss Mary King (Jeremiah's second wife) and Shadrack Adams, who later performed the marriage of Jeremiah and Mary King. Wilkinson County was not organized until 1803, so these three Garretts - John, Jeremiah, and Robe! r! t - were pioneers of that county. I descend through Jeremiah's son, John b. 1808, who married Nancy Gilmour in 1836 in Pike Co., AL: John Garrett - Nancy Gilmour Martha Garrett - Austin Simmons John F. Simmons - Flora Barthold Fred Simmons - Frances Wright Jane Simmons - John Stryker Ann Stryker (me)

His parents, Thomas and Eliza(beth), I think, had a son, Stephen, who was christened in Liberty Co., GA in 1794. Other family members may have been Samuel, John, Joel, Abner, and Benjamin. If so, I believe they lived in Wilkinson Co. GA between 1807 and 1809. (Thomas's younger sons were named Thomas B. and Abner R.)
