Ancestry.com put my old email address on this; will need to check my profile. 1. Did Polly Colbert who married William Moniac have any siblings? Have found 359/268 1860 Baldwin Co, AL census of William Colburt 27, wife Jane 20, son Dave 3, and Charles Colbert 60 all listed as Indians & born in AL. Is there a family connection with Polly? 2. Hi Randall! I too have been looking for the connections and have a little information. I have to credit a lot of people for their help and information. Big credit to Melissa for her help! I am related through Aaron Jr, who was the brother of Robert David Campbell. My grandfather, David Aaron, was Robert David's grand-nephew (my grandfather was 57 when my father was born). And my father always had coloring and features that did not quite fit that "Scottish" or "Irish" ancestry. Neither does my nephew. I was told by someone else who actually lives in Chilton County (who's name escapes me for the moment but I can find it) that the lands the Campbells lived on in Chilton County (which was mostly a part of Shelby Co until 1872) were partly on Creek land and that intermarrage was not unheard of, even before Robert David. Anywho... whatever I know, I will share. Don't use the reply as I rarely use that email anymore (it got hijacked, but I can't delete it without closing my account... sigh...) Reply: asameada@comcast.net I would like to know if we might be related (long story short... my grandmother destroyed a lot of records). My father was a poor historian (David Aaron died when he was 8 and my grandmother didn't share). Anyhow... please email... love to talk to you. Laurie Campbell Belair, Maryland
Randall I am interested in your Campbells with connections to the Creeks. My ancestor Robert David CAMPBELL married Charity Yohola/Yoholo, a Creek Indian and reported to be either the sister/daughter of Chief Menawa (although I have not been able to establish this connection). I do know that David and Charity's son Asa married Mary Ann "Polly" RYDER who was the granddaughter of Menewa. From what I have found David and his father/brother migrated to Bibb Co (then Cahawba) Alabama from Franklin Co, GA. David's father was Aron/Aaron CAMPBELL. There is record that he was married to Lydia LNU. Aron is believe to be the son of John CAMPBELL and an Unknown WALLING. John is believed to have died in Franklin Co, GA abt 1807. Would be interested in knowing more about your CAMPBELL's to see if they "fit" with my Campbell's in any way. For that matter decendants of any of the Southeastern Native American peoples are invited. Already several tribes in South Carolina and Florida have stated their intent to attend. This is not a commercial pow-wow, but a traditional Creek Festival sponsored by the local county government and people of Oconee (eastern Creek) descent. A very high percent of the people in the Sparta area have Creek ancestry, and the county was also the location of the last great council of all Southeastern Tribes in the East. The leaders from various tribes will dedicate the New Ocute Ceremonial Ground which is an authentic Creek townsquare and talwamicco mound. Plans will also be unveiled for the construction of a authentic re-creation of the Oconee mother town of Ocute, as it looked in 1400 AD. This will be a Living History town in which visitors will be able to stay for the day or for the week. In the 1600s thousands of Oconees were captured by English slave raiders and scattered all over the South and Carribbean. Later in the 1700s and 1800s, many Oconees intermarried with Caucasians and Africans. The "die-hards" fled to northern Florida and became the core group of what was to become the Seminoles. The famous Uncle Remus Tales are actually Oconee "morality" stories which parents told to their children and later to their African neighbors and relatives. Any member of a state or federally recognized Native American tribe will be admitted free, will not be charged a vendors fee, and can camp free at the adjacent county park. Tribal leaders will have seats of honor atop the talwamicco mound.

I assume your William Kirkland was William Riley Kirkland, who was born in SC in 1814 and died in Henry Co., Alabama. And yes, many of the Kirklands moved to Alabama around the same time. Moses Kirkland was from another branch of the family, descended from Benjamin Kirkland, whereas William was descended from Benjamin's older brother, Aaron. William Riley Kirkland did serve in the Indian was of 1846 under Jackson, but I don't have anything on Moses being a spy for Andrew Jackson or being called Leg-A-Walking. William Riley Kirkland's son-in-law, Williiam Green Locke, was very tall, 6'2". It has not been confirmed that Alcey Odom Kirkland was Creek, but she could have been. She came from an area around the Meherrin Indian Town in what was Chowan Co., North Carolina. My grandfather, whose mother was Emma Jane Locke Henderson, daughter of William Green Locke and Melvina Kirkland (her dad was William Riley) told me that we were part Creek and for the past year I have been trying to confirm that. Dr. Peacock did extensive research on both the Lock and Kirkland families and was unable to confirm the family tradition that Melvina was of Creek descent. I have the books he wrote on those respective families. So there is a persistant and strong family tradition for Creek descent, and in fact another posting said that Allcey was Creek and Catawba. I have posted a reply to her, and will e-mail her as well. I am more than willing to share any information I have, so feel free to contact me.
