    1. Looking for Creek Johnsons/Johnstons In SW GA - FL Panhandle Area
    2. PATRICIA CROUCH
    3. Hello, I am new to the list, although I have read most of the posts in the archives - really fascinating. I have always believed that my father's father's family had NA ancestry, based on their looks and how long they have been located in the sw GA, FL panhandle area. I was told that this was not the case, but recently I found out that one can tell about ethnicity from physical traits such as shovel teeth, epicanthic fold of eyes, shape of feet, and so on, which indicate NA ancestry. I am trying to find out if these people had Creek ancestry, and after looking at all family members I can find to have lived during the early 1800's in that area, I decided to start with a lady named Kissiah Johnston or Johnson. She was born in 1816/18 in Early Co, GA. I have no idea who her parents were. She married Sevier Whiddon in 1835 and they had four children, Dicy Ann (my gggrandmother) and several others. She passed away in 1855. They lived in Gadsden Co FL. On Lance Hall's Creek Researcher (a wonderful resource!) website, I found a list of Friendly Apalachicolas who fought for the Americans in the Seminole War, one listed as "Johnston Olochs Fixico" in Eshapa's Detachment, so I am trying to find out more about this individual as well and see if he connects to Kissiah in some way. Noticed that there were some posts on this list about some Johnsons being members of the Creek Tribe located at Tama GA. While I have been involved in genealogical research for several years, this is very different as I am trying to find a lineage that has purposely been obscured, for reasons that were legitimate at the time. I would appreciate any help or sugggestions anyone can offer, and will be more than glad to return the favor if I am able to. 1. [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Oconee Festival in Hancock County, GA (changed date)
    2. Hessi! Friends! The new date for the Oconee Homecoming Festival in Sparta, GA (Hancock County) is Friday June 18 and Saturday June 19. The County Commissioners Office originally called me earlier this week and said June 10 (which didn't make sense) I called back Friday to question the date and found out that it is the above. Sorry about that...I am not in charge of the festival - just working for them. The delay was caused by a delay in funding from the University of Georgia until after the new fiscal year began. The choice of that particular weekend had something to do with the moon and and the Summer Equinox, but I was not told the specifics. Some Creek traditions have been kept with the mixed heritage descendants there in the Oconee Valley. I remember that the elders in my mother's family on the nearby Savannah River always chose a weekend around June 20 for their family reunion. I now know that it was a rememberance of the traditions of Poskita...the Green Corn Festival. For those of you who have not heard...this is a "social" and "cultural" festival sponsored by the county government of Hancock County, GA. A large percentage of the county has at least some Oconee (Hitichi-speaking Eastern Creek), Muskogee (Lower Creek) or Yuchi heritage. The Oconee tribe formed the core of the Seminoles in Florida and also several Creek communities down there. The mother town of the Oconee was Ocute, which is in Hancock County. The last council of all the "civilized" tribes in the Southeast was held near the festival site. If you have any questions or want to register a booth, contact the County Commissioners office at 706-444-5746. All mikko's will be given seats of honor atop the talwamikko mound. Booths are free for members of state or federally recognized tribes. The officials of the festival are considering the established four Creek and one Yuchi tribes in northern Florida as being equivalent to being state recognized. We know that you are our brothers and sisters. The commissioners just do not want people who have no legitimate Native heritage passing themselves off as such. Richard (Mountain Lion)

Surnames: Tiger Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5R.2ADI/561.566 Message Board Post: Hi! I've been doing my mother's ancestry for quite some time now. Her name is Anna Jo McAlpine-Bissonnette and just turned 80 on March 16, 2004. My mother was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma to the late Mary Wadsworth and the late Chief Yuchi Micco Fus Hucha Yahola (Samuel W. Brown, Jr). I found Lance Hall's Creek web site to be the best for complete lists of names. I had tried the National Archives web site too but his is better. You can find individual Town Census Records at Ancestry.com to which I belong. They have all the early town census records online. You can subscribe to these records only or join Ancestry.com and pick the sites you want to access. I've been doing my mother's genealogy for almost 4 years now and have traced back almost 6 generations. My mother's family was from Sapulpa, Bixby, Wetumks, Broken Arrow, Coweta, Euchee, Big Spring, Okmulgee and Muskogee. After I discovered the Roll numbers I sent to the National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas ($20.00) for the copies of the original enrollment files and land records. It's hard to trace some as my great great grandmother, Matilda Jackson was married about 4 times and my gr. gr. gr. grandmother was married twice, which makes the family tree grow with every discovery. I'm still trying to find information on Mollie Tiger, my grandmother, Mary Wadsworth's paternal great grandmother who was married to Thomas Atkins, Jr. a non citizen. Mollie Tiger's roll #8523 on Creek Census Card #2981. She was full blood creek. She's also listed on card #585 as a parent and on card #3905 as a parent. Kate Atkins-Holden was the wife of Thomas Holden, Jr. Her father was Thomas Atkins of Coweta and her mother was Mollie Tiger of Coweta. I have 22 Dawes enrollment packets but now have to get a few more to fill in the gaps in the "Family Tree." I've traced my mother's Native American Roots back to 1889 and still searching. Feel free to email me at BlondiNativeAme3@Netscape.net or FAX me at (413)734-2266. I hope this information might be of some help to you. Good luck, Annmarie
