Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5R.2ADI/75.174.681.683.3 Message Board Post: Shirley: Here is some more info regarding a eulogy written to my Mother, Helen Larson, who passed away October of 1994. She was in the hospital only three days when she passed away from cancer: Helen Caroline Elizabeth Aydelotte, Donner, Larson was born January 25, 1914 in Joplin, Missouri. Her father's name was Harold Paul Aydelotte Her mother's name was Lucille Taylor Aydelotte. She was a woman full of good works and unshakeable faith in the Lord. She did good deeds quietly, even sometimes to people who did not know her, and often to people who could never repay. She was given to hospitality and everyone was welcome at her table. She was full of love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and expressed it in many ways to each of them--and taught them how to love. She was a woman who won many battles in prayer--she saw healings, victories, restoring of faith in others. She loved good music, and often attended the opera when a young woman. She had aspired to be a research scientist and had the inquiring mind, excellent grades and ambition to do it--but, she married and her children came along, and then she became the most devoted, serious, conscientious mother possible. "and her children shall rise up and call her blessed" according to Proverbs in the Bible, and truly they do.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5R.2ADI/75.174.681.683.2 Message Board Post: Hi Shirley: This is a message from Carol Pointer nee Donner. Hope you are well. Here is a little info for you: LUCILLE Grandma Lucy—how fond my memories are of you! Lucille Taylor/Aydelotte/Shaeffer/Aydelotte How beautiful, elegant and dignified you were—tall with beautiful hair and lovely hands with expressive long fingers. Naturally speaking, one would say you had “bedroom eyes”; however, spiritually speaking, they reflected the inner beauty of a meek and quiet spirit which is far more prized by the Lord than outward beauty. You didn’t speak much, but what you had to say was worth listening to—at least I was trying hard to listen. It was very difficult to listen when my older brother was chasing me around and you were admonishing us to “love one another”. At the time I’m sure you could have easily thought that your words fell on deaf ears, but I heard your words with my heart and tried to live by those words much later in life. Some of the things that delighted me about you were: 1.) You always had gum in your purse for us 2.) You told us not to “lie like a rug” 3.) You said “oh, you make me so tired” 4.) You used to take little brother Bill to funerals of people you didn’t know until Mother found out and put a stop to it. 5.) You taught your parakeet to say its prayers before you fed it 6.) You told my folks that you couldn’t stay any longer at our house, because you had to get home to feed your parakeet 7.) You dressed up so beautifully to go to church at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church. You didn’t have much money, but you somehow were able to get a truly tasteful hat, lovely dress, gloves and nice looking purse and shoes—all well coordinated. Of course, in your younger years you were truly a fashion plate—sometimes changing your clothes three or four times before going out anywhere, much to my Mother’s chagrin. When Mom and Dad divorced and Mom and us children moved up to Portland from Chico, California, you were truly “there for us”. What a strength you displayed on our behalf, and what a support for our Mother. It was necessary for Mom to work, so you kept our house spotless, watched little brother Bill and Harold and I when we returned from school, and then went home to your apartment nearby and prayed for us a good share of the night. What an incredible example to me you were of how a godly woman should live. Mother told me the story of you and her crossing the railroad bridge when she was a baby. You first checked with the railroad guard and he gave you to the “okay” to cross. You started off with Mom in the baby carriage and got half way across and here came the train—it was early! The train was rushing towards you and Mom and the guard ran as fast as he could over to you, grabbed Mom out of the baby carriage, put her under the stub of one arm, threw the baby carriage over the edge of the bridge into the water, held on with his one good arm, ordered you to jump to the side and hang onto the timbers, and Mom said you could feel the hot steam of the engine in your face as it passed. Grandpa was fishing off the bank of the river below the bridge, and when he saw this happen, he fainted! You and Grandpa Paul lived some quite interesting places, i.e., the mission in Mexico where Grandpa was caretaker, then south of the Rio Grande River in Texas where Grandpa’s wagon and horses went into the quicksand and Grandpa barely escaped with his life. He wasn’t always so fortunate, though, because as still a young man his sleeve caught in the machinery at the bakery where he worked and he was killed. I understood from you and from Mother what a wonderful man he was and how much in love you were with him and how it almost destroyed Mother because they had such a close relationship. Then you married Ray Schaeffer, and what a terrible mistake that was, as he physically abused you for years, and Mother also. I am so thankful he finally left and you had some peace. Mother told me that as a child she would swing and swing in the front yard and look up to heaven and ask God to please help you because you were being abused. You gave sacrificially of yourself and whatever little money you had right up until the end. Also, you maintained your 38/24/38 figure until you passed away. You said your secret was Walk/Vegetables/Water. You could still bend over and touch the floor with your hands flat on the floor until you were 78. I can’t even begin to be thankful enough for the example you were and for all of the sweet kindnesses you showered on us children and your powerful prayers. Love, Carol Shirley: This was a story I wrote about Grandma Lucy for my "How to Write Your Life Story" class through the local community college. Hope you enjoyed it. Most of the information you have is correct, except the spelling of the Aydelotte name. As you have probably discovered, there are quite a few preachers, teachers, etc. in the Aydelotte line. I would like to learn some of what you have discovered regarding the Taylor family. I have some pictures of the Taylor family back to our Great grandmother and Grandfather. If you are interested, I will make copies and send to you if you furnish your address. Whose child are you? Hope to hear from you soon. There was very little fighting done by the Americans.
