    3. I saw the drawing and the maps, too. I know the drawing is here http://www.rhus.com/port.html and I suspect that I found the maps through the same bibliography http://www.rhus.com/Creeks.html, but I can't find that site again with a quick search right now. I will continue to look over the next few days. Hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: DWaddellDober@cs.com [mailto:DWaddellDober@cs.com] Sent: Monday, January 17, 2005 4:29 PM To: CREEK-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Re: Hannah Hale and Tustunnugee Hopoie Do you have the link for where you found the superimposed maps?? Some did some did not. Many young women were given to the agents to settle debts, to gain land, and other things. So, history may not be as sweet as it may have been passed down according to some families. You also have to remember that there is not alot of information on Native American as for as marriage is concerned, because alot of them did not practice European religion.

My grandmother taught it to me and I've always believed more people should know it. My grandmother was Zella Macaw Styles Wilson. Her grandmother was said to be half black, half Creek and was said to have married her husband, an Irish trapper, to be able to stay in Creek territory after the removal - by Georgia Governor Troup, a cousin to "chief" McIntosh and a cousin to Andrew Jackson. (My grandmother was a descendent of a Red Stick clan - Panther clan - and had no kind words for Mr. McIntosh.) Though my grandmother started our family's geneology and was better at it than I, I still haven't confirmed her grandmother's descent. Sometimes I suspect she may have borrowed someone else's name. Nobody in my family (a Southern white family) ever wanted to talk about the fact that an ancestress may have been half black - possibly a descendant of an escaped slave, though the Indian side was always acknowledged. Finding the stori! es my grandmother told me stated in very similar words by others IS my confirmation of the oral history I have as a legacy to my grandmother.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5R.2ADI/918.3.2.2 Message Board Post: Osceola is a county in Florida. So the spelling is probably right. Below is some info. about the county. On the 21 Jul 1821 there were two counties formed in Florida - Escambia to the west and St Johns County to the east. From these two counties were formed over sixty counties. in 1824 From St Johns county the area to the south became Mosquito County and Enterprise was the county seat. The name was changed to Orange county in 1845 when Florida became a state. A year before in 1844 Brevard County was carved out from Mosquito County. On the 12 May 1887 Osceola was named a county having been created from both Orange and Brevard Counties. At that time Osceola reached all the way down to Lake Okeechobee until 1917. During the First Seminole War, Andrew Jackson pushed them farther south in 1817 and 1818, n 1819 Florida was bought from Spain and the momentum grew to push the Seminole farther south. The treaty of Payne's Landing, 1832, called for the removal of the tormented Indians. Osceola was one of two Indian Chiefs who resisted being removed from the lands of Central Florida boarding Lake Okeechobee during the Second Seminole War, 1835 to 1842. Osceola, was tricked into a meeting under a flag of truce and captured. He was imprisoned by Gen. Thomas S. Jesup at Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Florida. Later he was moved to Fort Moultrie at Charleston, S.C. Later he became ill with malaria and quinsy and lost his will to live and died on January 30, 1838. Osceola, which figuratively means "black drink cry," was born in Creek County in 1803. He is believed to be part Scotch, part Creek Indian. Highly regarded by the Seminole Indians up to today for his tenacity and determination ! to keep the Seminoles free and able to retain possession of Indian lands. In the late 1980's there were about 1500 Seminole Indians living on three reservations near Lake Okeechobee.

We have traced some information through her daughter Mary Frances VENTERS (some say Venice) who married James Frederick DAVIS . I believe that her father's name was Stephen Venters(Ventress) and her mother's name was Jane. They lived in Telfair County Ga in 1820, Putnam County Ga in 1830, and Chambers County, Alabama in 1840. If Jane were an Indian, and she married a white man, would there be a marriage recorded for them? Is there any way to find out more information on Indian agents? What exactly did they do? Attached are photos of Mary Frances Davis. The first one is when she was younger. She would have been 1/2 Creek, if the family lore is correct.
