    1. Re: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Re: CREEK-SOUTHEAST-Black surname
    2. Jerry Cranford
    3. Melody; I don't have any help for you but the mention of "black dutch" brought a smile. My mothers side are cherokee (tslagi) and my grandmother insisted that she was "black dutch" to her dying day even though her grandfather came to IT during the "Trail of Tears". Are you sure they were Creek? My ancestors that were Chereokee were Chicamauga and came from NC through TN and then to IT in about 1834. Some went back to Arkansas for awhile before being pushed back to IT in the late 1830 and early 1840's. Most of the Creeks came from Georgia and Alabama. My dad was Creek (don't really know which group) but they were removed from the Jasper County, Georgia in 1824 (I always get a chuckle when I read about the first "white" child being born in the area about 1815). I was just looking at a photo of his grandfather (my g grandfather) taken about 1875. I am proud of his (our) heritage. They picked up the name Cranford somewhere along the way. My best guess is that they used the name of a trader. My 90 year female old cousin said that all of the women got together and allowed a white man to marry into the clan and that he was a trader. Anyway that is the way the story goes. Good luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melody (Little Wolf)" <little_wolf_melody@yahoo.com> To: <CREEK-SOUTHEAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 25, 2005 4:01 PM Subject: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Re: CREEK-SOUTHEAST-Black surname > > Hi, > > I am searching my Grandfathers side...I don't have much to go by...My > Grandfathers name was Richard Black...his fathers name was Walter Black > who married Idaho Thomas...now my uncle tells me we are Creek...but back > in the day when they put them on reservations, my family fled to the > mountains...and are not accounted for...I am thinking maybe someone is > from back in our family tree...My Grandfather taugh me Native American > ways, but would not talk about our Culture in front of anyone else...he > said he was Black Irish or Black Dutch...I know he was born in Tennessee > and his parents were born in North Carolina...the last name Black might be > a cut off of another name...does anyone have any info at all that might > help me??? 3. We are researching our Indian heritage around Houston County GA. Does anyone have any info on the Quinny POWELL family of Randolph and/or Houston Counties? Apparently he was an influence in our family because they named a son after him. Our research surname is Nancy MATHIS. Thanks Terrie

Her son Hugh named his eldest son Clark Glawson. Clark signed all family documents with his "X" after the parents both died. I will have to locate my contact at ancestry.com to determine what the source is of the information on the last names; it was documented and I corresponded with the person but then broke off. I won't probably get much information; once I locate them I'll share with you the email address. CE

That is our name; it was sometimes Glawson, sometimes Glossen, sometimes Glasson, sometimes Glason, which sound maybe like translations of the French "glisser" (which means gloss or glaze or glass). We are descendants of Hugh Glasson who is a descendant of Joseph Glawson or Glason depending. The name later became Glossen, but sometimes still Glasson. --C. E. Whitehead

    2. Hello, I reside in NC, just a couple of hours away from Town Creek Indian Mound. It's a fantastic place and has some very informative historical information. To answer your question, Yes, the former residents were Creek. They have an informative website -- check it out, and perhaps you'll be able to visit it sometime. Sharon in NC

Surnames: CAMPBELL, MENEWA, MENAWA, YAHOLO, CORNELS, REID, COBB Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5R.2ADI/1201 Message Board Post: On page 136 of Ulysses Abrams book (Early History of Bibb County Alabama) I found the following: "James REID vs. Opothle-Yahola and Jim Boy (37) Trespass, assault, and Battery - This action was tried at the term of the Circuit Court, which has just terminated. Judgment by default had been rendered at a previous term. From the evidence, it appeared that in June, 1828, the plaintiff accompanied a deputy of the sheriff of Shelby County into the Creek Nation for the purpose of aiding in the execution of process; that he was seized by the Indians, bound with cords, stripped of his clothing save a light shirt and pantaloons, carried first to Tuckabatchee and there, by one of the defendants, bound with additional cords and ordered on to Thomas Trippett's who was the sub-agent; and from there, taken to Line Creek by a party of Indians under command of the other defendants, his back made bare, tied fast to a tree, and beat with hickory sticks an inch thick and five feet in length, forty stripes. The court instructed the jury that the only question for them was to assess damage. They retired, and in a few minutes, returned with a verdict of $4500.00. The case was argued by Busbee and Hinton for the plaintiff; and Gordon, Goldthwaite and Campbell for the defendants." (37) The Alabama Intellingencer, Tuscaloosa, April, 1830. Can someone tell me what relation Opothle Yaholo had (if any) to Menawa? My Charity, a creek indian, who married David CAMPBELL is said by some to be the daughter or sister to Menawa . . . and some says she is the daughter of Davy CORNELS . . . very confusing! Anyway the person, James REID, mentioned in this case was a neighbor of Alexander COBB who my Elijah C CAMPBELL (son of Charity and David) was the overseer for . . . I am interested in researching this further, but do not have any idea where to start . . . also am interested in the CAMPBELL who defended them. Thanks, Melissa
