Happy to say, though, that my ancestors never took a shot at yours although they were in the area at the same time. Yikes. That would be embarassing, huh? Anyway, my Hawkins ancestors were living on Minister's Run near Paw Paw Creek, Monongalia County, WV and also in Marion County, WV from about the 1750s on. Get back to you soon on Chief Logan info. By the way, when did your ancestors arrive in Alabama?

I have been reading a couple of books having to do with the region of north western Virginia, which I call West Virginia from here on out, that Chief Logan was from. I will try a get together a summary for you or you can look up the references yourself. The books are " Chronicles of Border Warfare" by A. S. Withers and "History of the Early Settlement and Indian Wars of West Virginia" by Willis De Hass. I have an on-line source for purchasing the books that I will send on to you later. You might try Googling "Chief Logan" and Virginia for other sources. Happy Hunting! Marcy

I have been doing alot of reading about the western Virginia frontier. Chief Logan's family was massacred however a niece survived and was taken by whites for adoption. Sometimes native children were taken as hostages to exchange for white children who had been kidnapped. Let me know if you need more or specific information and I'll see if I have that reference handy. Marcy L. Keith

    1. HICKS, POWELL, MATHIS/MATHEWS
    2. Terrie
    3. I am researching Patsy HICKS b. abt. 1790 and her daughter Nancy POWELL b. 1810 GA. They both were either Cherokee or Creek. Nancy's children Marlin and Johnson (Jr) applied to the Dawes as Cherokee, but were denied. There is some kind of connection to a Quinny POWELL of Randolph Co. GA since Nancy named her first son Quinny Powell MATHIS (MATHEWS) and Nancy's husband Johnson MATHEWS had business dealings with this Quinny POWELL but I know nothing more except he was witness in several land transactions. They lived in Houston County GA before moving to Cherokee, Macon Co AL for a short time where son Quinny Powell MATHIS was born (Mar. 1840), then moved on to Pontotoc Co MS (found 1850). Thanks, Terrie

    1. Re: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Update - Looking for information on John D. Williams
    2. Richard White
    3. Williams is a common name, as is John... but Whigham is a small place so this may be the man who married my 2-great aunt Mary Haire. If so, they had a son named Marvin Williams whose photo I have in my possession and he shows no Creek ancestry that I can see... however, there is oral history of Creek ancestry in the Haire family too. If this is the right guy let me know and we will take it from there. Mary Haire's family was from Gadsden County, Florida, and her parents lived in Gadsden County, Liberty County, and Gadsden County again, in Florida, before moving to Whigham about 1886. Mary might have been born in Gadsden, Liberty... or even Leon County, Florida. Her brother John Levi Hare (sic) was born in Leon County on 17 March 1856. Mary Haire married John Williams in Gadsden County Florida on 19 March 1879. I do not know who Mary's paternal grandparents were. Her maternal grandfather was Levi Butler who appeared on the first Florida census (1830) in Gadsden County. Mary's maternal grandmother was Levi's first wife whose name is unknown to me. However, census records of her children indicate that she was born in Spanish Florida about 1811. If you have this  information or anything else pertaining to him I would really appreciate  it. Thank you, Kirby Kirby, Please refer to Fort Mims and the Tensaw Settlement, which specifically lists George Weekley and his family. The book is published by Levender Publishing Co. Bay Minette, Al, 1993, for the fort Mims Restoration Assoc. On page 58 of this book they list the names of people who were either at Fort Mims, or had relatives who were killed there. It says George Weekley's wife and children were killed there, but that he had gone home to get supplies. It does not give his wife's name. On page 41 it says that George Weakley (Weekley) filed a claim after the massacre as reported in Frontier Claims in the Lower South , compiled byRichard S. LAckey, and refers to pages 31, 32 34 & 35, where the claims are listed. George's wife may be listed there. I hope this information will be of help to you and the list. Walt Tarvin
