    2. My great grandfather was also born on the Yellow River in 1862. That is according to his daughter's (my grandmother's sister) records. The census record has the family (Michael Gibson) living in Santa Rosa County in 1860. My aunt's records say that they moved to Baldwin County, Alabama when her father, Silas H. Gibson was still a baby. They were of Creek descent. I would also like to know if there were other Indian people living near the Yellow River. Diane

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5R.2ADI/1201.1 Message Board Post: Melissa, Menewa's (1765 - 1843) boyhood name was Yoholo; the name given to him by his father was Othlepoya Yoholo. When the Creeks chose him as chief in 1820, he became known as Menewa. On April 26, 1826, he was chosen as the principle chief of the Creek Indian tribes. (This information is from a letter written by Mary Ann Campbell Peigh of Bessemer, Alabama, on December 28, 1970, to her uncle, Joshua Banks Campbell.) Menewa married Hannah Cornell, also a Creek. They had two children, Katee Ann (1786 - 1865) and Little Warrior (1785 - 181?). Katee Ann married Reuben Weed (Creek, ? - 1814; died in Battle of Horseshoe Bend), and they had Katee (1804 - 1890), Hannah (died 1880), and Charity Yoholo (died 1872). Charity, Menewa's grandaughter, married Robert David Campbell (1767 - 1835), and they had twins Asa and Nathan, and two girls and another son who seem to have disappeared with their mother. Asa and Nace were raised by their father's brother, Alvin, upon their father's death. I hope this will help.

    3. Actually, "Wewa" is Muskogee Creek for "water", and Hatchee is the word for "creek", which is found in a lot of place names in the southeast. Paul Hornsby >Also, Daniel Hosford (the one who married Martha, and then Catherine), was >"Wahatchie" and I am told (by a Creek woman) that it refers to water -- someone who >was close to, liked, or was associated with the water.

    05/01/2005 04:47:44
    1. HOSFORD/HORSEFORD
    2. Patricia -- I have Daniel "Wahatchie" Hosford married to Martha "Patsy" (Unknown -- possible Moniac, or another surname that would make Susannah, their daughter, "a Moniac granddaughter") -- children Susannah, Andrew, and Richard. Dan married 2nd Catherine (don't know surname) -- they had Claiborne "Clebe" b. 1828, who married Martha, and then Ann Ferth, and Clebe's sister was Ann Hosford who married William Hinson. I have a couple of Hosfords on the 1847 Walton Co. tax list, and then on the 1850 Walton Census, at household 211, are a Daniel Housford age 30 and a James age 30. Living next door to Peter Steele. (Image 29, ancestry.com). On Image 28, at 204 is Elijah Turvin, and others; 205 Zep Turner and Sarah; 206 William Cousins and family; 207 my Richard Taylor and Susannah and family. Turner and Cousins, I understand, were "Eufaula Creek Indians" -- though I wish someone with more knowledge than I have would explain that to me. Don't know if this will help anyone or not. Also, Daniel Hosford (the one who married Martha, and then Catherine), was "Wahatchie" and I am told (by a Creek woman) that it refers to water -- someone who was close to, liked, or was associated with the water. If this becomes more than a clue, hope someone lets me know. Faye

    1. Re: [CREEK-SOUTHEAST] HELP!!!!! Creek-Hoya-Seminole
    2. songmaker
    3. Hoya sounds like "Haya" (spelled phoeneticly), Creek spelling is Hvyv, meaning "maker". Probably originally connected to another word, pertaining to what he made. The Creeks & Seminoles did not use the term "Trail of Tears", which was what the Cherokees called it. Creeks usually called it "The Long Cry". Secondly, if Hoya dropped out of it in the Carolinas, he may have been Cherokee. The Creek removal route was not through there. Paul Hornsby > I have been researching all Hoya of the Lower Creek indians most of whom made their way south after the Creek wars and joined the Seminoles. Who then went to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears, but as the story goes my great great grandfather dropped out of the Trail of Tears somewhere around the Carolina's. My great grandfather William Hoyer's obit has no parents listed, which is understandable since he was part Indian. So that is my dead end. So if anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

    3. did you try finding his marriage certificate? death certificate? and mortuary info. on file? sometimes these things will list parents. Did he live to get social security? if so you can apply for the "original application" which asks that question also, HOYA is unusual among the tribes, I've never seen it but I have seen HARJO and HARO. My own line is HODO which I think is actually Dutch or German (not sure) but married into Creek lines, but I can not find the maiden name, marraiges, ect. for them. SO I have turned to looking for variants, and if HOYA is on any native census or lists I've missed it (entirely possible). it might help to post what other info.you have on your great great, such as where he lived and at waht ages, who he married, ect. Someone maybe able to assist you with more info.
