I always laugh when I read the statement "Killed will leading a band of friendly warriors". that is so funny, warriors are very seldom friendly or they wouldn't be warriors.

I am a direct line descendant also of the same line. My link is by way of James B. Ward and Elizabeth English. Their son,Benjamin Franklin Ward was my gggrandfather. It is all a confusing mess. There were several James', Johns' and Jacks' in the early Ward Clan. But yes,Nahoga did own land in Hickory Ground Town, now part of Elmo County, Alabama. It was from a land grant. Jack Ward was given a grant of land in Montgomery County, Alabama. Nancy Knight Ward was Nahoga's English name.

We're in Brewton... Some of those names sound familiar. She also has old pictures dating way back as well from her research. We're on the Pettis/Darby side of the family. Family legend suggests Indian Chief as well as Princess? in the family dating back but can't be proven. The e-mail address I provided is her direct email addy. We're looking into the Creek side of it as well to see if any of it is truth. There was some recent activity on that part concerning papers in the family that my g grandparents? or g-g grandparents received when the records building had been burned down. Those papers have since been lost. Just talk to mother lol...she'll know most of it.

    2. Agte
    3. This is all I have on this Ray family: Mother was Jemima Ray/Rae (maiden name unknown) b. 1797 Carolinas. She moved to Al. where children were born. Don't know husbands name or date of death. May have been John Ray on 1840 census. Jemima Ray was in Pensacola FL in 1850 where older children lived. In 1852 daughter Elizabeth Ray m. James H. Cobb. They moved to Baldwin Co. Al. by 1853 along with Jemima Ray and her children: Jasper, Servin(Sovreign), Perscilla & Sara. I have always suspected that the name might have been McRae/McRay from the Scotch-Irish immigrants to the Carolinas. Regards S. Dean Agte --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5R.2ADI/1236 Message Board Post: Thanks to the internet, I think I may have traced our Creek lineage back another generation, but I admit I am confused. Here's what I've always known based on affidavits, census records, etc. My Great, great, great Grandmother was who our family based our Creek heritage on. Her name was Elizabeth English Ward, born in Georgia 1798, died 1876. Records say she was an orphan. From there, we go to her son, my great-great grandfather, his daugher, my great grandmother, etc. etc. to me. While trying to track down a 'tribe' that Elizabeth may have belonged to, I starting digging deeper to find that Elizabeth's husband, James B. Ward, born 1796 in South Carolina, (no date of death available), was also full blood Creek. Apparently, his father, Jack Ward was an Indian Chief and married Nahoga Moniac around 1792/1793. They had 14 children. Supposedly they were fur traders and travelled alot. Well, in an effort to confirm James and try to find him in a census somewhere, I stumb! led across the 1832 Creek Nation Alabama Census where a Nahoga Ward is listed (!). Could it be??!! She is #67 on Hickory Ground Town, listed as head of household and she is the only name listed as owning slaves (possibly because she is the wife of the chief?). Could she be my great-great-great-great Grandmother? All these years my family has based their Creek lineage thru Elizabeth, my g/g/g grandmother when it now appears our lineage may go even further back thru her husband's parents instead. Can this be considered maternal lineage, or is it paternal? I'm confused. If so, does anyone know what specific tribe my family came from and where it was located? (Was it "Hickory Ground" tribe or something else?). I don't whether it's true or not, but I've been told that I may be eligible to apply for membership with a tribe. That would be such an honor I can't hardly imagine it happening, but I am committed to finding out as much as I can on behalf of my family and espec! ially my son. Somehow, I want him to know the difference between sim ply saying you're part Indian and actually being one. Thank you so much for trying to help me or point me in the right direction!

Yes, some of the early Glissons may have intermarried with the various Indian tribes. Alas, I do not trace my ancestry to Obediah, though I have tried to. I am a descendent of Anne Glosson the daughter of Hugh Glasson who may have been the son of Hugh Glasson Sr. or else of Joseph Glawson. In any case, we are descended from Joseph Glawson. One person is trying to trace this line further. Joseph Glawson is perhaps the son of a James Glawson. The name is perhaps an anglicized form of Glisson (Glisson just means to gloss or glaze, probably a name for a glazer or a glassmaker), but I just have not gone back to that point. I do understand that some of the Glissons married into the Lumbee tribe, which was a mixed tribe too! That is it included Indians plus! --cew

    3. Looking for information on my 6th great grandmother Patsey HICKS who married Quinney POWELL. On Patsey's grandson's Dawes application (Johnson MATHIS), it shows that chief John ROSS testified that he knew well Patsey and family and that Patsey grew up with tribe. Patsey had a daughter named Nancy MATHIS who had a daughter with an indian man and named her Minerva MATHIS (is this the M.M. MATHIS referred to on Minerva's brother's Dawes Application??) They lived in Randolph and Houston Co. GA, before the children/grandchildren moved to Cherokee, Macon AL then they moved to Pontotoc Co. MS/ Looking for any information on HICKS, POWELL or MATHIS relating to these families. Terrie
