My mom's side is Choctaw, so I also research in the area for them, but My dad's is they pyburn... my email is shewhoseeks@att.net I have different information from Woodward and someone else on Sophia McGillvray and Sehoy...and have worked on the family, in fact have it on my web page as well as the Stiggins. I am figuring Jacob's mom was a neighbor, and have ruled out the Stiggins, Mims, and Dyer family, as daughter. Based on new info, and naming patterns I think her name may have been Millie/Emily or Florence. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is the most thorough and accurate account of the families involved with the Fort Mims massacre I have ever read. I am a Stiggins researcher, however, and recently found some Steel/Steele connections through an excellent Steele researcher. I am very interested in your grandmother, Frances Pyburn Steele, and would like very much to discuss her and husband Jacob Pyburn, Sr. with you. I also found recently that some descendants of my Creek Stiggins family were Mississippi Choctaw Dawes applicants, not Creek. I am still trying to tie all this together. 2. Info from Lynn Hastie's 1991 Weatherford book re surrounding families: Joseph Stiggins was father of Red Eagle's third wife., Mary. Joseph was born in VA on Roanoke River, an Englishman who fled to the Creek Confederacy when the French nearly wiped out the Natchez tribe, settling in what6 is now Talladega County. Mary's mother was a Natchez Indian named "Haw", English name Mrs. Nancy Gray, a daughter of Chief Solocta Chinnaby and niece of the King of the Natchez tribe. Creek War Chief William "Red Eagle Weatherford's brother John David "Jack" Weatherford married Martha "Patty" Dyer, daughter of David Tate and his wife Mrs. Margaret Dyer Powell (Powell a relative of Chief Osceola), and grandaughter of Reuben Dyer and Mary Hollinger Dyer. Reuben and two of his daughters were killed at Fort Mims. No Pyburns listed in the book. gmw

    3. Hi there, Richard! That is very helpful information. I have family living in Perdido Key and visit there often. Beautiful place. I also lived in Lake City for many years and am very familiar with Waycross, Fargo and the Great Swamp. My backyard in Tallahassee adjoins the DeSoto site, so this neighborhhood was part of the original Apalachee community. It's still beautiful over here and I can imagine what it must have been like before exploration destroyed it. I've learned a great deal of Creek history and culture from this list. Dan Penton is associated with a Creek community west of Tallahassee. Thanks, all! You have a great group. 2. Hey Linda! Thank you for the nice letter. Probably what gave you the I idea that I live in Pensacola is that I am a member of the Perdido Bay Creek Tribe - based near Pensacola. However, we have more members in Georgia than in Florida. Chief Bearheart was born in SE Georgia on the Altamaha River. Many Georgia Creeks moved to Pensacola during WWII to work in the shipyards. My heritage is actually Okonee Creek from NE Georgia and NW South Carolina. However, the Okonees do not have a separate tribal structure. The SE Georgia Creeks spoke the same language as the NE Georgia Creek - Hitchiti. That is also the language spoken by the Miccosukee in Florida. Perdido Bay was about as close as I could get to my actual heritage. Most of my work, however, is for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma. I was born in Waycross, GA in the Okefenokee Swamp. When my family vacationed in Florida, people thought we were mixblood Miccosukees - for good reason - the Miccosukees were originally the elite of the Okonees. Thanks again! Richard Thornton

    3. So sorry! I do not always keep up with this list as well as I probably should and have you all confused. I see you have been given contact information for Dan Penton. He is indeed a wonderful person and historian and well respected. I'm sorry I missed that documentary. There has been a great deal of "discussion" over the years with regard to the origins of that cross. I am not Creek but work with tribes in my role with the state so am always trying to learn as much as I can to improve my understanding. Dan has been very helpful. Thanks!
