    1. [CREED] Cornelius Creed
    2. Dear Cousins, especially the ones interested in Cornelius Creed. I hope that is everyone. I've located some records on ancestry.com that you may have found already. I probably have heard about each of these records in the past, but it wasn't until last night that I felt they were connected. Here's my thoughts. I trust you will let me know if I am on the right path. Miles Carey and Mary Booth were married about 12 April 1791 in Onslow Co NC. (Bondsman was Henry Simmon. Witness was Will Crag or Will Gibb. There seem to be two records that are slightly different.) I am inclined to think that the marriage bond for Thomas Carey and Elizabeth Pearson, dated 25 Sep 1787 in Onslow Co NC, is for a brother of Miles Carey. More about him below. Another marriage that I located is for Shadrach Cary and Elizabeth Cary in Onslow Co NC. There was no date listed. I have no idea at this time how this couple related to the other members of the Cary family. [Lou, the record I found shows Mary's surname as Booth, just as Sarah DeCastro said.] Three years later about 31 May 1794, Cornelius Creed and Mary Carey were married in Onslow Co NC. I believe Mary to be the widow of Miles Carey. They had at least one child. William Creed. Lou wrote: "I have noted an Onslow Co NC deed. 17 Aug 1821 William Creed to Edward Ward, 50 Acres, being land that 'fell' to Creed on the death of his brother Matthew Carey." I believe Matthew Carey and William Creed were half-brothers. They both were sons of Mary Booth Carey Creed. The will of Thomas Cary dated in 1812 lists his wife as Mary. His children are Ruth, John, and Jephthah. From his will, which Sandy told us about that is online, we learn the children are not of age. I do not know if that means they are under age 16, 18, or 21 or some other age. When Thomas was married in 1787, his wife's first name was Elizabeth. Now his wife is named Mary. I'm thinking he either was married twice or his wife's name was Mary Elizabeth. For now, I'm going with Mary Elizabeth. She's not in my line of Creeds, probably, so it's not that high on the list of things I want to learn. So, in my way of thinking, both Thomas and Miles were married to ladies named Mary. Does anyone know that to be true? >From the will of Thomas Carey: "I wish my executor to sell the lightwood heaped together for the purpose of tar kill, two guns, one steel trap, cross cut saw, hand mill, and my right to the land I bought of Cornelius Creed, also the land that I bought of Robert Hank. I wish only my right sold & no deed more than a quit claim from my heirs and the money to be applied to pay my just debts and in case there should not be enough sold to pay my debts, I wish my executors to sell such property as can be best spared." Not that it matters a lot in genealogy, but I am curious. What is "tar kill." Are those tools used when cutting trees to make lumber? I "think" Thomas Carey bought land from Cornelius Creed (Cornelius' wife's brother-in-law from her first marriage) and Robert Hank. He was willing to sell the rights (trees, mineral, oils, coal), but not the land, to pay his debts. However, if they didn't get enough money to pay the debts, he said to sell the property. And, I know there is a quit claim involved. Can someone explain what that is in very simple language? Thank you. Does this make sense? Nyla **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? 2. turpentine production i think from lightwood and done in a kiln thus "tar-kiln" naval stores - i think the horry creeds were producing naval stores as well i now have the guess that the horry/socastee creeds are not closely related to the onslow creeds and sorry but i am back out the door again Richard Smyrl Creed ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2008 6:43 PM Subject: [CREED] Cornelius Creed > > Dear Cousins, especially the ones interested in Cornelius Creed.
