This is a subject that has been aggravating many recipients of email from users who are AOL subscribers. The problem is that AOL causes question marks to be randomly inserted into the text when viewed by non-AOL users. This is most annoying when viewing posts to these Mailing Lists. It also shows up in private posts, depending on the email browser being used by the recipient. As many (including me) have suspected, it is a problem with the AOL users' configuration within the AOL email program. When AOL upgraded hardware and software recently, the changes caused some problems with AOL users' configuration settings. J. Young posted a "fix" for this problem on the Listowners Mailing List and any of you who are AOL users should follow the instructions and make sure you have the proper settings. ========================================== On the AOL's WEB MAIL on the Mail Page, behind the words "AOL Mail" ,in very small print, is a link to "Settings." Use the following steps: 1. Click on "Settings". 2. Look below the "Back to Mail" button; there is a list that includes: General, Accounts, Compose, Spam Controls, Calendar, Instant Messenger. 3. Click on "Compose". 4. From the resulting list, REMOVE the check mark from in front of "Use Rich Text/HTML Editing". 5. Click on the "tab" for "SAVE". 6. Then Click on "Back to Mail". ========================================== Please make correction if you are going to post to one of the Mailing Lists at Rootsweb. (As a matter of fact, until AOL "fixes" the problem, I would suggest that you make the change for all your emails, because I've received personal email from AOL users where those dang question marks show up randomly all over the text. It makes reading the text extremely difficult.) Regards, Sarge (George W. Durman) List Administrator

From time to time, we List Administrators have problems with subscribers to our Lists whose email server is AOL. This note is sent to explain the problem and to attempt to help AOL users correctly configure their email settings. The AOL mail system uses both a "Black List" and a "White List". The Black List contains those email addresses that the user does NOT want to receive email from; the White List contains those email addresses that the user DOES want to receive email from. The problem with AOL's system is that if a user puts, for example, the address johnqpublic@whatever.com in his/her Black List, and JohnQPublic is a subscriber to a Mailing List at Rootsweb, then AOL, for some reason, rejects all email from the List. If you're an AOL user, PLEASE make sure you don't "Blacklist" any List subscribers, AND make sure you have put the email address of the Mailing List(s) in your "White List". Thanks, Sarge
Just for information for those of you who use BellSouth as your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Since the "merger" of BellSouth and AT&T, there have been problems for a lot of users getting their emails from Rootsweb. The folks at Rootsweb haven't yet figured out what is wrong that is causing BellSouth to not accept emails from Rootsweb. Users have been "bounced" for about a week and a half now; some have re-subscribed, only to be "bounced" once again. So, if you're a BellSouth user, be advised that if you stop receiving posts to any Rootsweb Lists, you may have been bounced. The best thing to do is to contact the various List Administrators and have them check to see if you're still subscribed. I know it is kind of silly for me to speak to you about this problem, since if you have been un-subscribed, you won't see this; but... some are still subscribed and this is for them in case they, too, get "bounced". You can always reach the Admin of a List by sending an email to: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com. In case you do send email to Admins and you don't get a reply, try sending to the personal address of the Admin. My address can be found in the From: header of these emails, and below. Regards, Sarge GermannaResearch@rootsweb.com
The old search engine for the Mailing List Archives at Rootsweb has been replaced by a new one. There is no longer a page for each Mailing List; instead, there is ONE page, where you can type in the name of the Mailing List in the search window. Here's how to get to the proper page at Rootsweb: Log on to Rootsweb: <http://www.rootsweb.com> Under "SEARCH ENGINES & DATABASES", click: "INDEX OF ALL SEARCH ENGINES AND DATA BASES " Under "OUR MOST POPULAR SEARCHABLE INDEXES:", click: "ARCHIVER SEARCH" (Or, you can go directly to the search engine at: <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search>) Click on the "ADVANCED" Tab. You MUST do this! If you do a search from the "KEYWORD" Tab, you will get hits from every Mailing List at Rootsweb. (You will get MILLIONS of hits!) Unless you want EVERY email ever posted to a specific List, you need to choose a date in the last box. This new Archiver Search engine takes a little getting used to, but it really works better and faster than the old one. Example of how cool this new search engine is do the following search: Body: (Leave blank) Subject: Ludwig Fischer From: (Leave blank) List: (The actual name of the List, e.g. Germanna_Colonies, Broyles, Klug, Claar, etc.) Date: (You can select a day: 12 Mar 2007 A month: Mar 2007 A year: 2007 (Or leave blank for ALL hits. You don't want to do this.) Just thought some of you might become confused if you tried to use the old way to do an Interactive Search. Regards, Sarge
Just a note to inform everyone that the Anti-SPAM filters at Rootsweb have really been tightened up. There was just too much SPAM being posted and it was working List administrators to death trying to keep up with it. Some users have observed that their posts never showed up in Lists, and I, as administrator, never saw them either. The reason for that is that with the tightening of the rules, NO posts containing HTML (Styled Text, Fancy Text, Colors, Bolding, Underlining, Sizes, Tabs, Bullets, Forms, Tables, etc., etc.) will be posted (as usual). The posters won't receive any notification, and neither will the List Administrator. The posts containing HTML will just disappear into the ether. Only "PLAIN TEXT" emails will be posted, so make sure that you have your email program set to that setting. To be on the safe side, do not include ANY kind of tags at the end of your posts, no "Signatures", no long lists of surnames being researched, etc. If you feel you MUST have some sort of tagline, Rootsweb requires you have no more than 3 lines. IMHO, those long, long lists of surnames are a waste of time, usually. And, including your place of employment, duty title, address, phone number, etc., is absolutely unnecessary. Let's try to keep the Lists "lean and mean", and this means "snipping" out all unnecessary text from the body of an email when you are replying. Quote back just enough of the original message to make it clear to what you are replying. Thanks, Sarge List Administrator
Today, as Administrator of several Mailing Lists, I once again was notified of messages that were not accepted for posting to some of the Lists I manage. This is not only aggravating, it is extremely time consuming when I have to wrestle with messages that would have been posted had the senders followed some simple rules. In an effort to "educate" users on proper posting procedures, I offer the following: 1) For those who receive Mailing List posts in the Digest Mode, DO NOT quote back the entire Digest when replying! 2) When you reply, quote back just that portion to which you are replying. Highlight and delete all other portions, including the junk at the bottom of all posts. For those "newbies" who don't know how to "highlight" you put the mouse cursor at the beginning of the text, hold down the left button of the mouse and move the cursor to the end of the text. Release the left mouse button and the text will be "highlighted". Then you just hit the DEL key on the keyboard. 3) When you reply, DO NOT leave the subject line as it was in the Digest. If you do, the subject line will read something like this: "RE: LISTNAME Digest, Vol 2, Issue 2", where LISTNAME is the actual name of the List. This tells readers absolutely nothing about your actual reply or the original post. CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE TO MATCH THAT OF THE ORIGINAL POST "INSIDE" THE DIGEST. Let's say that message Number 2 inside the Digest actually had the subject of "[LISTNAME] J. A. Smith born in TX". THAT is the subject you need to copy and paste into your reply, not the subject of "LISTNAME Digest, Vol 2, Issue 2". 4) This may seem to be a lot of work for those of you who receive the List postings in Digest Mode, but if you're going to receive in Digest Mode, and you're going to reply to a post in the Digest, you're going to have to follow the rules, that is, don't quote back the entire Digest, AND change the subject line. I don't want to sound too dictatorial, but bad subject lines do no good for anyone. Many subscribers receive posts from dozens of Mailing Lists and just don't have time to actually read the bodies of the hundreds of daily posts they receive. Instead, they rely on Subject Lines to let them know what is in the posts, and to know if they need to read the bodies. Also, when a person replies to ANY post, whether in Digest Mode or not, and quotes back the ENTIRE post, the reply contains superfluous text that is not needed and just takes up more space on the servers at Rootsweb when the posts are "archived". The archived posts are there forever and so is the unnecessary quoting. Thanks for listening, Sarge (George W. Durman, Mailing List Administrator)

The new mail program at Rootsweb will not allow posters to use the BCC: header in emails. If you post to a Mailing List, and include ANY addresses in the BCC: header, the post will be "bounced". If you post or reply to the List and want to also send a copy to an individual privately, use the CC: header. Don't ask me why the new software is configured this way, but it is. Folks, Rootsweb is once again making changes. This time they're changing over to a new mail server program and some problems have been observed but they have either been fixed or are in the process of being fixed. This time, one of the problems has to do with the List addresses. As some of you may have noticed, there is no longer a "-L" or "-D" in the address. It's just plain GERMANNA_COLONIES@rootsweb.com, although the old GERMANNA_COLONIES-L@rootsweb.com is supposed to continue working for some time. To be on the safe side, just use the address without the "-L", that is, GERMANNA_COLONIES@rootsweb.com. I guess I should pass along some stuff that has come up during the changeover. 1) You can NOT subscribe to both the Normal and Digest Modes with the SAME email address! If you only subscribed to one Mode in the past, you should still be subscribed to that Mode. If you were subscribed to both, with ONE email address, you have probably found out by now that you are receiving email to that address in only one Mode. If you wish to subscribe to the other mode now, you must use a different address. For those who have only one address, a good solution is to get a free Hotmail account (or a free account from some other service) and subscribe with that address. Sorry, but that's the way the new Mailman works. 2) To subscribe to a Rootsweb List that has been "migrated" to the new Mailman service, here's how: To subscribe to the Normal Mode (old -L Mode), send to: GERMANNA_COLONIES-request@rootsweb.com Put SUBSCRIBE in BOTH the subject line AND body To subscribe to the Digest Mode (old -D Mode), send to: GERMANNA_COLONIES-L-request@rootsweb.com Put SUBSCRIBE in BOTH the subject line AND body To unsubscribe do the same as above, except use UNSUBSCRIBE. For other Lists, just replace GERMANNA_COLONIES with the actual name of the List. 3) If you were using the Digest Mode before and were receiving the Digests in MIME instead of Plain Text, you have probably found that you're now receiving them in Plain Text. To revert to the MIME Mode, email the List Administrator and request to be changed to MIME. You can contact any List Administrator by emailing to: ListName-Admin@rootsweb.com Where ListName is the actual name of the List. 4) If anyone has questions about this changeover, don't hesitate to post a query. You can do so here, since there may be others who need to know the same thing. Regards, George List Administrator

Hi, **This message is being sent to the CRECELIUS mailing list.** The email address that RootsWeb has for the CRECELIUS list admin dfulton@hmcltd.net is bouncing, so RootsWeb is looking to make contact with the list admin. Will the list admin please contact Andrew Billinghurst (billingh@rootsweb.com) so that we know that you are still maintaining this list and please reply quoting this message. List members there is nothing for you to worry about and nothing for you to do, it is probably just an email problem for the person looking after the day-to-day management of this list.
