John CRAWFORD married Persis STOWELL either right before or soon after the Hezekiah STOWELL family left Guilford, VT and settled in the Clinton/Bainbridge/Afton (Chenango Co.), New York area in 1786. I am hoping to learn whether or not John Crawford (born about 1760-1765) come from Vermont and who were his family. Hezekiah Stowell (father of Persis Stowell), a "Yorker" received a land grant in that area of Chenango Co. NY along with other Yorkers who were involved in the land struggle between Vermont and New York. To settle the controversy they were granted land in NYS. Does anyone have CRAWFORD ancestors in Vermont about 1750-1790? Does anyone have CRAWFORD ancestors in Chenango or Broome Co. NY from about 1790-1860? John and Persis STOWELL CRAWFORD had a large family of children (born between 1796-1804 approx), most whose names have not been identified. Known children were Joseph, Rebecca, Persis and possibly Andrew and Jane who grew to be adults. Rebecca probably married an Amos Wilmot, but I cannot determine where they lived (both died after 1865). Abigail and John who died in their 20's are buried in Afton, NY. A Levi CRAWFORD who witnessed a family deed is likely related to the family. A Jane CRAWFORD married a Charles Grinnell who had earlier been married to Persis Stowell's sister Sally. Persis STOWELL CRAWFORD died 1839, at which time most of the CRAWFORDs appear have disappeared from the Chenango NY area.
