I have been a member of Ancestry.com for several years and find it well worth the $59. On the other hand, some people have written to lists feeling they had been cheated. I also subscribe to their magazine Ancestry and Genealogical Computing. Everyone needs to decide what types of resources best fits their own research. I personally have several lines going back to the colonial period and Ancestry has quite a bit of material covering this period including the 1790 census information and a number of early New England town records books. The DAR lineage books are on line, and I would subscribe for use of that resource alone. However, I might not have found Ancestry very useful as I begin this endeavor. If you want access to a lot of print resources like you might have in a genealogy library, then you will probably like Ancestry. If you are just beginning searching your family history, I would recommend waiting to join pay services like Ancestry and Genealogy Library until you have examined and used many of the free resources available. I would recommend taking advantage of the free periods that are available. That will give you some hands on experience and help you to make an informed decision.
