It doesn't look like this George spent any time in Alabama, so I don't think this is your fellow, but maybe he belongs to someone else on the list: George Washington Crawford b.22 Dec 1798 in Columbia GA d.22 Jul 1872 in Augusta GA. After a preliminary education in Columbia GA, he graduated from Princeton College in 1820. Admitted to bar in 1822 and began practice in Augusta GA. From 1827 to 1831 he was attorney general of GA. From 1837 to 1842, he was a member of the state house of representatives. He was elected to the 27th Congress as a Whig and served for almost one year during 1843, resigning to become governor of GA. He held that position until 1847. Following that, President Taylor appointed him secretary of war; he served in the cabinet post from 1849 to 1850. In 1861, he presided over the state seccession convention. He died at his estate. Happy Holidays everyone! Debra Claussen
