    3. Well, dear friends and cousins, I guess this is the last report on my sojourn to Kilbirnie. I do want to express my thinkings about the condition of the mausoleum. While the interior of the Kirk and the Kirkyard in general are beautifully kept, the inside of the mausoleum has been used for trash, just about covering the effigies of Thomas and Janet in their period dress. There are coke cans and no telling what else in there. The only access into the mausoleum is two small slits, one in the side and one on the end of the structure. The largest slit is just wide enough to get a camera into. I would imagine that in their time, the effigies were quite beautiful and detailed. It would be nice if they could be restored and the mausoleum set aside as not to be used for trash. While touring the premises with Rev. Ian Benzie, he expressed his desire to produce a web site on the Auld Kirk. I told him I thought that was wonderful. I hinted that I thought the Crawfords in America might contribute to such projects. Of course though, Rev. Ian Benzie has only been at the Auld Kirk for a month or so; he probably has a lot of prioities to conquer before tackling a web site. Lastly, I encourage you to also make a sojourn to Kilbirnie and visit the Auld Kirk. My amateur attempt at a narrative and pictures do not come close trying to describe the beauty of the Kirk. More than that, I cannot capture in words the feeling one gets inside to set on pews that once your forefathers sat or to gently place your hand on the wood and carvings throughout the church, trying to capture the essence of an earlier time. Go forth........ Don Crawford
