William Harris Crawford b.24 Feb 1772 d.15 Sep 1834, Senator from Georgia. Born in Nelson Co VA. Moved with his father to Edgefield District SC in 1779 and then to Columbia Co GA in 1783. Started practicing law in Lexington GA. >From 1803 to 1807 he was a member of the state house of representatives. Then elected to United States Senate. Served from 1807 to 1813. President Madison offered him the position of secretary of war in 1813, but Crawford declined. Instead became minister to France until 1815. Upon return, he did accept appointment as secretary of war for Madison, but a year later was transferred to secretary of treasure until 1825. In 1824 he ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for President of the US. In 1827 he returned to GA and was appointed judge of the Northern circuit court and served until his death in Oglethorpe Co GA. Hope he belongs to one of us, Debra Claussen
