    3. : Thank you for today's message about Lemuel. Here's my information: James Gotcher b: abt 1787 in Henry County, Alabama married, abt. 1811 in TN, Nancy Margaret Aldridge b: abt 1793 in SC. They both died in an Indian attack 3/1837 in Rabbs Creek, Lee County, TX.There is a historical marker at the site of the massacre in Lee County. (The spelling on the marker is GOUCHER which seems to have been used interchangeably with Gotcher.) Their daughter Jane Gotcher b: abt 1814 in Alabama married, in 1833, Lemuel Crawford b: abt 1812 in South Carolina. Lemuel and Jane settled in Rabbs Creek near the Gotcher's. The massacre occurred at the Gotcher's, where apparently Jane was staying with her parents after Lemuel was killed at the Alamo. Jane and Lemuel had one child, a daughter named Margaret Elizabeth, b. Dec. 5, 1834. Jane Gotcher Crawford, her daughter Margaret Elizabeth Crawford, Jane's younger brothers William Riley Gotcher (who left many descendants) and James Gotcher Jr. were taken captive by the Indians. They were ransomed by Charles Spalding who later married Jane and became guardian of the Gotcher children. Jane and Charles Spalding had several children and there are many Spalding descendants. Margaret Elizabeth Crawford married, on April 21, 1850 in Bastrop County, TX, Edward Henry Timoney b: July 14,1816 in Williamstown, Berkshire County, Mass. They had one child, a daughter, Mary Jane Timoney b: abt 1851 in Bastrop County, TX. Margaret Elizabeth Crawford Timoney died at age 18, Jan 8, 1853, as a result of burns suffered when she fell in a fire. Mary Jane Timoney was raised by the Peter Bundrant family and married Daniel Bundrant b: Jan. 24. 1838, on March 12,1868 in Bastrop County, TX. Their daughter, Margaret Ann Bundrant b: Oct. 21. 1869, married Richard Edward Wearden b: Aug. 7. 1863 in Preston, Lancashire, England. Their son, Thomas Edward Wearden b: March 7. 1891 in Killeen, Bell County, TX, married, on February 14, 1909, Mary Pearl Owens b: Oct. 30, 1893. Thomas and Mary Pearl's second son, Thomas Jr. Wearden is my father. I remember my great-grandmother Margaret Ann Bundrant Wearden quite well. She died when I was 11 years old. I have a copy of a letter she wrote my uncle detailing her foreparents. Charles Spalding apparently sold the Gotcher/Crawford land grants as he was guardian of the surviving children. You mention Lemuel's land grant being transferred to his heirs on June 29, 1848. Did your source name those heirs? My great-grandmother was quite certain that those grants never came to her great-grandmother Jane Gotcher Crawford or Lemuel's only child, Margaret Elizabeth. I hope this information is of use to you. There is a lot of information available about the Gotchers (Gouchers) and the Arledges (several spelling variations), but almost nothing about Lemuel.
