This is an outline I pulled of the ancestors of my husband's grandmother. We have not researched the earlier people, but others shared their information with him a long time ago. Hello, Judith. This is my Crawford line also; my ancestor was James, brother to your husband's William Thomas. James was born 1809 in Haywood County and died 1896 in Clay County. My James (with no middle name) was the father of one daughter, Martha, and three sons who served in the Civil War. I have, courtesy of a generous cousin, a copy of a letter James wrote to his son, John, during the war, which is one of my most prized possessions. At any rate - many years ago, in 1970, I made the assumption that George and Sarah's son, George WASHINGTON Crawford, had been named for his father, thereby making the elder George a "senior". With absolutely NO source documentation, and being new at the genealogy hobby at that time, I took the liberty of making the elder George George, Sr., and his son, George, Jr. Well. My error took roots and since its first sharing via snail mail (LONG before computers), my error has taken on a life of its own. It may be that the elder George actually had a middle name, but I've never seen his name on any source document with so much as a middle initial. If you (or anyone else on the list) is in possession of a source for that information, I would be eternally grateful for the knowledge. Further, by my having given the elder George a middle name, and that name being "Washington", (the same as his son), he somehow became the prime target for being one and the same as a George Crawford who was the son of one Valentine Crawford, and everyone knows the rest of the story. My George became attached to a very long line of Crawfords with connections to the first president of the United States, and there, bless his heart, he has remained. Am awaiting the miracles of DNA testing to help determine the actual father of my George Crawford, but at this point, I am most positive that my blunder in 1970 has caused an erroneous connection which will never be corrected in my lifetime. Shame, shame on me. Once something is published, it becomes etched in stone and apparently cannot be undone - ever. Lesson learned. Never make an "assumption" if you ever intend to claim that your lineage is accurate. Use original documents as sources whenever possible and never EVER take someone else's research as gospel. I agree that it's impressive to have a lineage back to Adam (or to George Washington's Crawford friend in my case), but I was extraordinarily happy with them when they were just plain old hard-working George and Sarah Crawford with that houseful of children. Good luck to all in your Crawford search, Linda Murray (formerly Harrison) Marietta, Georgia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard & Judith Busch" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 12, 2007 9:38 AM Subject: [CRAWFORD] Crawford from VA>NC>TN> Texas > This is an outline I pulled of the ancestors of my > husband's grandmother.
