    1. Re: [CRAWFORD] George Crawford of VA and NC
    2. Linda Murray
    3. I once thought so, simply because the one in SC is the only George Crawford who appears on the 1790 US census. However, keeping in mind that Virginia's 1790 census was destroyed, and therefore, none of the George Crawfords of Virginia are listed in the first US census, I have decided (in my OWN feeble mind) that he is probably not the same. Of course, it's possible that he left Halifax County after paying taxes there in 1789 and went to SC prior to the 1790 census, but that's something I've never been able to get a handle on. In the 1795 Tax Lists of Burke County, NC, he was shown in Capt Bradshaw's Company with Joseph Kerby and his father-in-law, Josiah Curby (Kerby). The Josiah Kerby family was in Surry County, North Carolina, in 1790, and because George Crawford and Sarah married sometime around that year, I have to think that he was somewhere nearby instead of way over in SC. Again, however, ANYthing is possible. If you have done any Kerby research, you know that Sarah's family came to NC from Pittsylvania County, which was formed from Halifax. The 1789 tax list of Halifax County, VA, shows George Crawford and some related Kerbys as paying taxes in Halifax County. >From my personal notes on Old George: 1789 Personal Tax List of Halifax County, Virginia: George Crofford Henry Baker Kerby & sons Obediah Kerby Joseph Kerby Richard Kerby Burke County, NC Land Grants: Crawford, George - 1795 - #2328 Crawford, David - 1799 - #2961 Crawford, George - 1799 - #2797 Crafford, George - 1800 - #3631 Kirby, Josiah - 1805 - #3606 Crawford, John - 1822 - #4413 1800 Burke County, NC, census: 735 - David Crawford - 20102 - 22001-00 (2 free white males under age 10, 1 aged 16-26, 2 aged over 45 - 2 free white females under age 10, 2 aged 10-16, 1 aged over 45 - no slaves) 732 - George Crawford - 21010 - 10100-00 (2 free white males under age 10, 1 aged 10-16, 1 aged 26-45 - 1 free white female under age 10, 1 aged 16-26 - no slaves) Simply because David Crawford is the only other Crawford who appears with the George I believe to be ours in early records, I think there is a connection somewhere, but what that might be, I have not been able to determine. I DO, however, suspect a closer relationship to this David than to Valentine, Jr., who died in PA, and is buried where? West Virginia, if my failing memory serves me? Again, from my notes: 1810 Haywood County, NC - page 61 George Crawford - 31110 - 1101 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45 - 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45 If the above census information is correct, our Old George would have been born no earlier than 1765, which makes more sense to me than the years of 1740 and 1755 which is shown in many databases and on the grave marker (1740) erected by George and Sarah's grandsons. Unless he had another family prior to his marriage to Sarah Kerby, he'd have been up to 50 years old in 1790 and up to 35 years older than Sarah at the time of their marriage. I need to be able to go to Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties to see what, if anything, might be waiting for me in court records there. It's a shame that Burke County, NC, records were lost, but with a lot of luck, something may turn up someday which will give us some absolute answers.
