Katherine, you need not delete *anybody* ! In FTM, at least, all you need to do is go to your mother's Family Page and create a report of her ancestors. From there, you should be able to export just the people in her family tree (File, Export) -- in GEDCOM format for most flexibility, or in FTM format for fellow FTM users.
