If you go to the Crawford family through the Rhodes/Rodes family then it is assured that Crawford's go back to Charlemagne. If you have access to the "Descendants of Charlemagne" you might find the proof. There is a 3 volume set and it is wonderful for proofs. I have found at least 3 lines back to Charlemagne. My David Crawford was in Jamestowne, Virginia in the 1600's and his daughters married a Rhodes. It is a well proven line.
