Maybe the following story will help. There was another Crawford who was a professor at my university. One day I asked him where his Crawfords hailed from. He told the name Crawford started with his grandfather. He had gotten into some bad trouble Liverpool, England. He was was waling down the street wondering what to do. He looked up and saw a sign on a building "Crawford Biscuit Company." Right then he decided to become a Crawford. He purchased a ticket to Canada and that is when his Crawford line started.
