I have only sent for an old survey map, from reputable companies. You can get a lot of stuff if you have a local LDS church near you for free. Just remember photo copies of origianal documents are the most accurate, also the original guy 100 pus years ago could of made a mistake too. I have seen my own family name, of course Crawford spelled differently in different documents. Don't get taken in by even a lot of legitimate companies, because if you ask around and look long enough you can usually find a nice person who will copy a couple of pages out of a book you need so you don't have to spend big money for some big book. Also watch the people who want all your info and help saying it will always be free. I did some volunteer software work online and also gave my research out and years later I find it "For Sale" online. Also free if you look around. Sorry this got long. I don't have the time I used to, to do as much as I would like to anymore. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~Thomas ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. If you go to the Crawford family through the Rhodes/Rodes family then it is assured that Crawford's go back to Charlemagne. If you have access to the "Descendants of Charlemagne" you might find the proof. There is a 3 volume set and it is wonderful for proofs. I have found at least 3 lines back to Charlemagne. My David Crawford was in Jamestowne, Virginia in the 1600's and his daughters married a Rhodes. It is a well proven line. My Crawford's came from DE to Ohio in the early 1800's to a tiny place called Shawnee. I assume it was named for the Indian tribe of that area. I knew it was in Perry Co. and that was all. A friend moved near there and told me how to go. I have put it off for several years but this year two "root keepers" and myself went to Shawnee. There are still Crawford's living there too, but my branch came to Pickaway Co. because it was farm land and they were farmers. Shawnee is built on the side of a hill and is like the rest of south eastern OH. As soon as I arrived I knew why they left. The wanted to farm and this area was very hilly. I found land records that show when they bought and came and when they sold and left. A library in New Lexington, Perry County seat, had a wonderful genealogy room that we spent many hours in. I agree with Patty that just visiting the area of where they lived brought insight as to their personalities and desires. 3. I can relate to Patty's experience. 3. Dear cousins, Over the years I have read about Smyth County Va, and always wanted to see it, Well, my wish came true, my husband had to work in Ohio, and he decided on our way back we were going to go another route, we hit the VA line and I mentioned that I would love to know where Smyth Co, was, and before long, low and behold, there it was. We stopped at the Settler's Museun of Southwest Virginia. There was a one room school house, a 1890 home and farm, many farm implements were there with the original prices on them. They have 2 cassette tapes one for the school, one for the home/farm. Although I know that the property was not that of my own ancestors, my heart was touched knowing that that is the area that they lived, there are Surbers, Hubbels and Crawfords still there I was told. It was also moving to know that that was the condition that they lived in, since most all of my family were farmers or laborers. Thank you to all of you cousins that faithfully do your genealogy and so freely share it with us all. May we all be blessed to find those that have been lost to us.
