Of particular interest is the interleaved copy of the History with notes, corrections, and additions. This material provides an important view of the development of this seminal work on the history of the White Mountains. The woodblocks created by Marshall Tidd to illustrate the History are also present. Also included in the collection is the register kept by Crawford and her husband Ethan Allen Crawford for visitors to their hostelry from 1823 to 1835. The later history of the text of Crawford's History can be studied through the correspondence relating to the 1966 and 1978 editions of the book. The collection, in 4 boxes (1.75 linear feet), was the gift of Frederick C. Crawford, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and William C. Wheeler. ____________________________________ BOX 1 1. 2. Definately... NEW HAMPSHIRE.. Judy Cornett [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Lucy Crawford's "History of the White Mountains" (http://www.nhpr.org/user/25) By _Laura Knoy_ (http://www.nhpr.org/user/25/track) on Friday, September 2, 2005. listen: (http://www.nhpr.org/audio/audio/ex-2005-09-02.m3u) In our third installment in our _Granite State Stories_ (http://www.nhpr.org/node/9512) series we look at the history, mystery and the legends of our White Mountains through the pages of Lucy Crawford's "History of the White Mountains". Written during the booming expansion of America in the 1800s, when economic profit was to be had by those with a pioneering and adventurous spirit, Crawford's autobiographical tale recounts their family's struggles and triumphs as they work to settle the White Mountains. Lucy and Ethan Allen Crawford's story encapsulates this greater idea of "manifest destiny", that America would and should expand it's frontiers into new and uncharted territory. Today, much of what is known about the White Mountains comes from this first history of the region and its first family. We'll learn about the history of the White Mountains, the lives of Lucy and Ethan Allen Crawford and the role that the Whites play in our New Hampshire heritage today. Laura's guests are Charles Jordan, Editor of Northern New Hampshire Magazine and the Colebrook Chronicle and author of several books, including "Tales Told in the Shadows of the White Mountains", Robert McGrath, Professor Emeritus of Art History at Dartmouth College, who has written a book on the art of the White Mountains called "Gods in Granite" and John Mudge, owner of Durand Press, a company which publishes many books on the White Mountains, including the latest edition of Lucy Crawford's book, for which John edited and wrote the forward. He owns a large private collection of images and information on the White Mountains and is a frequent lecturer on them. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

    3. The White Mountains are in New Hampshire. Vermont has the Green Mountains. This family originated in Ireland, came to Boston, then to Union, Connecticut. While many stayed in Union, CT, some descendents moved to Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The author of this book married into that part of the family that went to New Hampshire. Crawford Notch, in the White Mountains in northern New Hampshire is named after this family. It was published in 1978 by Appalachian Mountain Club. There are some illustrations in the book including a picture of Lucy Howe Crawford. My husband and I purchased the book years ago, thinking there might be a connection to our Crawford line. However, there isn't any connection, and I'd like to find a home for the book, if anyone is interested. The book will be free to the first person I hear from. Let me know if you have any questions.
