Yes, what has happened is amazing and I certainly never expected it to be successful. As I indicated, the experience did leave a bad taste in my mouth for alerting folks to anything similar in the future. Several Crawford descendants or interested people acted very badly, which caused problems for the cousin of mine who arranged our tour of Tusculum. He never expected what hit him. He owned a business in Amherst, as did the owner of Tusculum. It strained their friendship. The next time, if there should ever be a next time, I plan to keep my mouth shut. In this case, the damage is done, so I say let's move forward. I, too, would like to attend, but I will probably be in Oregon on business. Bob, while looking back through my notebook for items for the scrap book for Tusculum, I am amazed that we were able to keep up the momentum on this project considering that only a few days short of one month after your notice, planes would hit the towers in New York. Who could have dreamed when we started on this that such a thing would happen. And it's amazing that we could keep people interested in Tusculum during such times. I guess History is always important in all cases at all times. Thank goodness for that. I just wish I could go to the homecoming, I would love to hear Kathleen's speech on Tusculum. She is a descendant of the first Elizabeth Crawford who married Nicholas Merriwether. But, I am in a wheel chair if I have to go very far, so it would be just to much trouble for others to have to help me around. But I am so glad about the event. Are you doing o.k.? Hi Barb, Nice to hear from someone in Australia - I live in Newcastle NSW. I decend from Robert Crawford born in the Shetland Islands in 1819, but may have lived in Ayreshire,Perthshire or Fyfe in Scotland. I don't have a lot of research although it appears most of my relatives have lived in NSW but I have been unable to trace Thomas Crawford born early 1850's and William Crawford born 1856 who may have moved north. I am happy to share my limited information with you. I'm sure you all realize that the name Lafayette was used by many families and had nothing to do with any relationship to the Lafayette family. I'm am not saying that is the case with this family but in South Carolina and many of the early states this name was used to honor the Frenchman Lafayette and the role he played in the American Revolution. Another example is Calhoun. Many people use this name to honor John C. Calhoun and his role in history. The list could go on and on. It all depended on where in history your family was at the time when a name played a role in that families, state or nations history. Often a rural doctors name was used because he might have done something special for a family or lots of families. Again I'm not saying this is the case but a possibility. I would like to know more about the Wright family from the Carolinas. Since one of the lines I'm working on is an Elizabeth Crawford who married a William Ellerbe. ( Ellerby Elerbee) She was born around 1770 and died 12-19-1840. The name Crawford is used in the Ellerbe family for generations since. However we know for a fact that Elizabeth married William. ( William 1765-1830) William was in South Carolina but near the North Carolina Line. Has anyone ever heard of this family line? This line also has Boggan ( From North Carolina, Cash From North Carolina direct connections. Any Clues or hints you might could give me would be a big help. I love what this group is doing. My brother's name is William Craig. Our father's name is William Lafayette and he was named after an ancestor whom I cannot remember. My grandfather was William also, but I don't know his middle name. He's deceased, his widow (my grandmother) is 91 living in Midland, Tx. My grandparents taught Bible out of their home and from that a young man named Thomas became a preacher. (I just found that last thing out at my grandmother's 90th b'day party). I'm trying to search the origins of the Crawfords at the crossing that has been translated both "crows" and "blood". I'm stuck at the battle where the sherrif there was saved by a man they named Crawford. C. E. ----- Interesting that you have the names Wiliiam and Lafayette in your Crawford family. My grandfather's brother's name was William Adolphus (Born 1873) and William's son's name was Charles Lafayette (born 1894). I have no way of connecting anyone else. While some may not be, I'm definitely interested, my great grandfather had a Cherokee parent. I'm still looking for connections closer to the original Crawford's. I've traced that far and I'm stuck. Can anyone help me? From where did the gentlemant who was originally dubbed Crawford, there at the bloody, or crows crossing, come? ce -----Original Message----- >From: [email protected] >Sent: Aug 20, 2007 1:13 PM >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [CRAWFORD] SCOTTS CRAWFORDS > >It was Cherokee that the Crawfords were supposed to have connections to.
