Well-known educator and coach, James Monroe Crawford passed away Monday, March 23, 2015, after a short illness. He was born January 16, 1930, in Bisbee, AZ and raised in Pomerene. As a member of the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, he led the Tigers to a pair of state titles in football and a record 15 state titles in baseball. He retired from St. David Schools in 1994, but continued as coach, his legacy lives on through the memories he created, lessons he taught, and examples of humility, generosity, and teamwork he set. Sheila thank you!! these are my guys. I knew they drowned in Virginia but have been unable to locate press reports (would assume this sort of incident would generate interest) New information on John very welcome. This is a first bit of information. You may recall many years ago that you helped break open my deadlock on my CRAWFORDs from Beith because you recognised the name of my grandmother Nell Mimi and remembered that there was a Mimi buried in beith and thus we were able to fill out the family tree for which I shall always be eternally grateful! Thank you thank you thank you!! Looking into the Crawfords of Beith I found the following: William Crawford and his brother Robert Crawford both died in 1866 in Petersburg Virginia. Another brother John Crawford died in 1869 in Rocheport MO aged 46. All three were born in Beith, Ayrshire. If anyone has connections to these three I have more information on their ancestors back in Beith. Any information on these 3 I will add to my Beith Folder for any future inquirers. Thanks Sheila whose Crawfords all came from Beith!
Suspect this is my line of the family, but I will need to look after Christmas....I know my folks originated in Allegheny County, Pa and were Quakers ....unfortunately, back then, Quakers didn't put much on tombstones...often just initials....but my daughter lives 1.5 hours from there, so plan to go up this summer and research.... My husband passed away and I have been downsizing.....so will need to find the boxes on genealogy My James had a brother John..... and I think two or three generations had the same two names. -----Original Message----- From: Jon Crawford via <crawford@rootsweb.com> To: crawford <crawford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sun, Dec 21, 2014 12:18 pm Subject: Re: [CRAWFORD] CRAWFORD Digest, Vol 9, Issue 23 Don't believe this is exactly what you are looking for, but perhaps James Crawford had a brother John that I am as of yet unaware? I've "rescued" an old photograph of Lella WILCOX; Allie WAIT; Edith WILCOX; Grace WILCOX; and Bertha BALDWIN which was taken at the J. R. Halstead Studio in Albion & Leslie, MI. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the 5 young women likely in their teens to 30's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information about the women in the photograph: Nelly or Lella or Luella O. WILCOX was b. Jan 1871 in Leslie, MI to parents John A. or Willard WILCOX (1827-1911) and Sarah WILCOX (b. 1841). She was one of 7 children born to this couple including, Emma; Helen E.; Willard E.; James Weston; Lella or Luella; Grace; and Edith WILCOX, all born between 1854 and 1878. John had three additional children from a previous marriage including Byron Daniel; Ryan; and Alice M. WILCOX. Lella or Luella appears to have been married 2 times, first to Scott E. LANE (1872-1939) on 19 Aug 1896 in Leslie, MI and then to Harry or Henry Nelson TEALL (b. 1871 in Owasso, MI to parents Henry N. TEALL and Isadore NEWMAN) on 3 Apr 1907 in Leslie, MI with whom she had a daughter Frances L. TEALL b. 1907. She died on Leslie MI in 1950. Bertha E. or E. Bertha BALDWIN was b. 19 Aug 1882 in Michigan to parents John M. BALDWIN (b. 1857) and Emma WILCOX (b. 1862). Bertha had one sister, Mildred O. BALDWIN b. 1893. Bertha married Charles L. CRAWFORD with whom she had two children, Geraldine T. CRAWFORD and Lucille E. CRAWFORD. Bertha died 14 Dec 1980 in Brandon, FL and is buried in the Woodland Cemetery in Jackson, MI.
