    3. Does anyone out there have a connection to the Crawfords from Aiken, SC. They were slaves and free-slaves working and living at Redcliffe Plantation. The Plantation owner was James Henry Hammond. He had several plantations in Aiken, but Redcliffe was where he called home. 3. What county was Botetourt formed from? The records might be found there. Also, did his wife live in a county close by? They usually married in the county of the wife. If you could find a marriage record there should be a marriage consent from the parents if they were under 21. (Kentucky followed the laws of Virginia, that is how I know about the consents). 3. I don't know what others have done since ancestry.com cancelled the free public online trees. For now I've moved mine - over 23,000 individuals - to rootsweb's trees. That's the only place I've found that also shows my working notes which I want others to be able to see whether to sort out whose is which, or to see how I've come up with what I have. What next? Would any of you who keep your research out there for others to find pass me some suggestions please. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Wanda ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 8:52 PM Subject: [MountainKin] GenWeb Project websites are moving! Due to RootsWeb sites being changed to Ancestry.com, many GenWeb Project websites have been or are being moved to other domains. The GenWeb Project's mission has always been to keep genealogy available for free to all. Transylvania NC GenWeb Project website has not yet moved, but will be moving soon. I'll make an announcement when it happens. In the meantime, here's some info on other locations: Main page of USGenWeb with updated URL's. Free Genealogy and Family History Online - The USGenWeb Project http://www.usgenweb.org/ USGenWeb sites that are moving or have already moved include: Colorado has moved with a new URL of www.cogenweb.com. DCGenWeb has moved to www.theusgenweb.org/dcgenweb/ Georgia has moved its state pages to www.thegaproject.org Hawaii GenWeb has moved to a new server and can be found at www.higenweb.org Illinois has moved most of its 103 ILGenWeb county sites, plus four special projects and the state pages off of RootsWeb. The new Illinois GenWeb sites can be found at http://www.ilgenweb.net. Indiana has moved its pages to a new domain at www.ingenweb.org Iowa already had its own server (www.iagenweb. org), but as many as 2/3 of the counties are now planning to join the state pages on that same server. Kentucky State Pages are also moving. They already had their own domain, so the URL (www.kygenweb. net) won't change, but the pages will now be hosted on a new server. Maryland already had its own doman name at www.mdgenweb. org, but has now moved off of the RootsWeb server as well. Massachusetts has also moved to mysite.verizon.net/magenweb/ MIGenWeb has moved the Michigan state pages to www.migenweb.net. Mississippi has moved its state pages to www.msgenweb. org, with MSGenWeb county and special projects pages to follow. Montana is in the process of moving according to state coordinator, Kevin Haddenham, and can be found at www.mtgenweb.org. Many North Carolina counties have left RootsWeb for another server and the state pages will likely soon follow. OHGenWeb has moved the Ohio state pages with a new URL of www.ohgen.net/ohgenweb/ Oklahoma is voting on a move. ORGenWeb is in the process of moving Oregon state pages to www.orgenweb.org. The TXGenWeb has moved off of RootsWeb servers to www.txgenweb.org. The State pages for VAGenWeb have moved to www.vagenweb.org West Virginia has moved the state WVGenWeb pages to www.wvgenweb.org WAGenWeb will moving to a new server with a domain name of wagenweb.org The National USGenWeb pages may also move to a new server, but this is still under discussion. They already have their own domain, however, so changes if they occur will be pretty much "behind the scenes." The Family Group Sheets Project is moving -- primarily for new features that will allow them to improve their submission form -- and can be found at www.fgs-project.com. The USGenWeb Census project (one of them) has also moved - to www.usgwcensus.org. Arizona, Tennessee, Kansas and Florida GenWeb had previously moved to their own servers prior to this month. California GenWeb has never been hosted on the RootsWeb server. Many other state GenWeb sites were also already hosted on non-RootsWeb servers, including Alaska, Iowa, Louisiana, South Carolina and Vermont. My additions: Alaska is still at http://www.akgenweb.org/ Arizona had previously moved to http://www.azgenweb.org/ Arkansas is at http://www.argenweb.net/ California is still at http://cagenweb.com/ Delaware is at http://www.degenweb.org/ Florida had moved to http://www.flgenweb.net/ Kansas is still at http://skyways.lib.ks.us/ genweb/index. html Louisiana is at http://www.lagenweb.org/ Nebraska is under http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/state/ This site is both USGenNet and USGenWeb. New Hampshire is now located at: http://www.usroots.com/~usgwnhus/ South Carolina is at http://sciway3.net/scgenweb/ Tennessee is at http://www.tngenweb.org/ Vermont is at http://home.att.net/~ Local_History/ VT_History.htm West Virginia is still at: http://www.wvgenweb.org/ If your state is not listed, it will still (for now) be at Rootsweb. 3. I have been reading old newspapers on microfilm for a project completely unrelated to Crawfords, but I came across these entries that I thought might be of some interest to someone on the list. I am not, to my knowledge, related to any of these Crawfords. I can’t get clear copies of the microfilm at my library, so I’ve transcribed each. The paper is the weekly Tuskegee News of Tuskegee Alabama. I have indicated the date for each of these items. Tuskegee News October 11, 1866 Sales and Probate Notices Executors Sale Valuable Plantation in Cotton Valley By virtue of an order granted to us, as the Executors of Elisha G. Crawford deceased, by the Probate Judge of Macon county, we will sell to the highest bidder before the Court House door in Tuskegee on the 1st Monday in November next, the following real estate, to wit: North ½ of Section 29. South ½ of Section 20 South ½ of North ½ Section 20 120 acres of West ½ of Sec. 20 – also two acres in South West corner of the North half of Section 28, all in Township 15 of Range 24 – containing 962 acres known at the plantation an premises of the late Elisha G. Crawford deceased. This is a fine cotton plantation about one half cleared, has a good gin house and screw, and other out buildings, and excellent artesian well. Situated 12 miles South East of Tuskegee and 6 miles from No. 6 on Mobile and Girard Rail Road. Terms of sale one half cash and the remainder on a credit of 12 months. Wm. G. Crawford, A.J. Crawford, Executors. Tuskegee News Tuskegee, November 12th, 1866 Mr. Editor: -- On yesterday, I was informed that my services would be needed to hold an inquest on a man found dead in Caleebee Swamp. I accordingly got Dr. Rige, Mr. Jesse L. Adams, and Jas. M. Alexander, Jr. and proceeded to the place. We found the body of a white man this side of the swamp between Mrs. Gordon’s and Mr. Ellington’s, lying on the side of the road not more than six or eight inches from the wheel tracks and in the mud. The man, it seems, had staid on Saturday night at Mrs. Gordon’s and had complained of having had congestive chill the day previous. He ate his supper and went to bed, and left next morning before day. He was found dead on Sunday morning about a quarter of a mile this side of Mrs. Gordon’s about 10 o’clock in the day, by Mr. M.T. Wright. Mrs. Gordon says his name was ---WADE, and that he either staid down at Mr. Calvin Bryan’s place at Cotton Valley, or at his Steam-mill on the Rail Road. The corpse had the appearance of being that of a man about sixty years old, blue eyes, light hair, about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dressed in homespun clothes “a little the worse for wear,” and had under his head a bunch of palmetto that he had been braiding or plating for some purpose. After the Doctor had examined the body, we searched the pockets and found a spectacle case and spectacles, a recipe of some sort, two papers of medicine, as lot of old buttons, small pencil and toothpick. Whatever may have been the cause of his death, there is one thing very evident to my mind, and that it, that he died very easy, almost without a struggle; he had his hat on, and had lain in all the rain that fell on Sunday up to five o’clock. I empanelled a Jury from the bystanders, addition to it Mr. ADAMS and Mr. ALEXANDER, DR RICE making the examination and the Jury agreeing on their verdict. I returned to tow after leaving orders to have him buried at the expense of the county. Below you will find the verdict of the Jury. Wm. Dougherty, J.{P. & acting Caroner. We the Jury of Inquest Empanelled and sworn to inquire into and investigate the cause and circumstances of the death of a white man found dead on the road leading from Tuskegee to Union Springs, between Mr. Ellington’s and Mrs. Gordon’s, find that his name it-------WADE. Further, that there is no outward appearance or marks of violence on the corpse, and that he came to his death from some cause unknown to the Jury. This November 11, 1866. Wm. Doughtery, J.P. & A.C. M.T. Wright T.L. Gordon J.P. Gray S.J. Crawford Jesse L. Adams Jas. M. Alexander, Jr. Tuskegee News Thursday, November 22, 1866 MARRIED On the 24th ult., in Darlington, S.C., by Rev. Wm. Brearly, Col. Junius A. Law and Miss A. Blanch Crawford, all of Darlington District.

    1. [CRAWFORD] CRAWFORD Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Jane Florents CRAWFORD which was taken at the Rhoads Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Jane likely in her 50's at the time it was taken. In addition to her name, someone has also written "Aunt" on the back of the photograph. I am not sure if the name "Florents" is a middle name, or a first name, or a phonetic spelling for the name "Florence", but I am hoping that it is a clue to connecting her with family. I am hoping to be able to return the photograph to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [CRAWFORD] Ct. Crawfords & Wrights
    2. Hi, new to the list and I hope you can help me unscramble the following Crawford ladies. My gggrandmother was Caroline Louise Crawford b. 1830 Norwalk, Ct. died abt 1875 in Norwalk. It looks like her mother was a Polly Crawford b. 6 Mar 1769 d. 23 July 1857 61 yrs. Caroline's sisters would be a Margaret b. 1829 & Angeline b. 1834. ( Angeline may have married twice. #1 Ashley Starkweather on NH. and #2 George H. Stone of NH and they lived in Rockingham, Vt). There may have been brothers also. This info comes from the 1850 Norwalk census . My ggrandmother was Angeline Louise Smith Wright b. 1867-1936 Norwalk. She married Luther Martin Wright of Norwalk. I have info. from census that show a Polly Crofoot b 1796-97 d. 1857 Norwalk and a Nancy Crawford b 1765 d. 1849 Norwalk. These two are buried in Pine Is. Cem. in Norwalk and I think they may be mother and dau. Sources say that Caroline Louise was dau. of Jotham and Selecta Jarvis Crawford. I have my doubts as they were in Saratoga NY area. Another source says that Angeline b. 1834 was dau. of a Joseph and Mary Whitney Crawford of Norwalk. I can not find out any info on Joseph and his family. Polly could be nickname for Mary. Whats makes this difficult is that no males are showing up in these families...I'm sure of Angeline Louise Smith Wright and Caroline Louise Crawford only. Does anyone have any of these ladies in their family tree. I would love to connect the dots. Thank you for any help...Sandee from NH
