    1. Archive of Original Documents
    2. Alan Cole
    3. Greetings, I recently started posting a collections of original Ware family documents. It all started when Betty Spillman contacted me to ask me to view a collection of documents. After viewing them, I offered to post them. There has been enough interest in them for me to think that others may want to post not only additional Ware documents, but also original documents from many other families. I would be happy to publish all original family documents that you are able to forward to me. I must rely on you to submit all supplemental information that you may have on the respective documents including transcriptions. My current source is working on just that for the current papers. You may view the beginnings of my document archive at http://homestead.com/Warepapers/ Alan An American Family www.homestead.com/AnAmericanFamily An American Family (plain text edition) www.homestead.com/alancole Favorites www.homestead.com/ColeLinks Alan Ray Cole 4746 Bordeaux Lane, Mason, Ohio 45040 (760) 281-9888, voice / (760) 281-9879, fax AlanRayCole@USA.net To see the full version of An American Family rather than the plain text edition, enable Java in your computer settings, use a current browser, and set the monitor resolution to at least 1280X1024 . .

    2. Henry Crawford
    3. Black Crawfords probably refers to the fact the one of the late Earls of Crawford, being a lowlander was appointed leader of the Black Watch, the 'crack' highland force. It solved the problem of appointing a highland leader of the highland force thereby infering some degree of superority which given the peopensity of the highland tribes og going into battle was to be avoided at all costs -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Crawford <acraw33@mindspring.com> To: CRAWFORD-L@rootsweb.com <CRAWFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, 30 August 1999 21:42 Subject: Crawford Priory >Mike: You have wonderful info. 3. I have beem watching some of this line with interest. Its a long time since i really dug into the ancient history but there were a lot of different lines it seems. The main problem with the crawford history is the 'break' due to Cromwell. there have been a lot of attempts to 'wrest' the title back to its 'rightful' place under the Crawford name. All have failed for lack of 'proof'. I have heaps of stories etc, but at the moment due to othe rpressures must let them slip - my PhD is more important Keep up the thread. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Crawford <andycraw@umich.edu> To: CRAWFORD-L@rootsweb.com <CRAWFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, 30 August 1999 19:45 Subject: Re: CRAWFORD history >My understanding of the Crawford history is that the main line developed >at Crawford (North of Moffet) and the lands and Earldom passed to the >Lindseys through the marriage of the daughter when there was no >surviving son. 1. Correction on WWI Draft Registration cards
    2. Randel Conner
    3. I received a letter from the National Archives today informing me that information previously sent out to mail lists with regard to ordering WWI draft registration cards was in error. My request letter was returned with the following explanation: 1. 24 million cards were boxed and arranged by NARA employees. The original arrangement was by state, thereunder by county or draft board, and thereunder alphabetically by the registrant's last name. The cause for arrangement by draft board instead of county is due to the size of certain cities. ....as a result, we require a street address when searching for cards in most large cities. ( * See below) 2. ... cards were microfilmed by Genealogical Society of Utah in the exact order they were originally arranged; each NARA regional facility has a copy of the microfilm for the states in the region that it serves Any patrom wishing to use microfilm will find the cards arranged exactly as they are in the box. THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE CARDS HAS NEVER BEEN CHANGED. 3. Request forms can be ordered via email archives@atlanta.nara.gov, by telephone 404-763-7383 or in writing: NARA Southeast Region, 1557 St. Joseph Ave., East Point, GA 30344. 4. At a minimum the following info is required for NARA staff to search draft registration cards: Full name of registrant, complete home address at the time of registration (to include county), name of nearest relative. 5. Additional information, if known, will improve thoroughness of search: birth date, birth place, occupation 6. Price for copies was raised to $10 per card in July 1997. The fee is for copying only; there is no charge for searches when a record is not located. You do not need to request that both sides of the card be copied and you do not need to send a SASE. 7. Walk in customers make make self-service copies for .10 per side. Draft registrations were held as follows: 1. June 5, 1917 - all men between the ages of 21 and 31 were required to register. 2. June 5, 1918. All men who had become 21 since June 5, 1917. 1. Margaret Crawford Hall's parents and sibs for all
    2. Whoa!. I had no idea I'd set off this chain reaction. Margaret Crawford was the daughter of Isabelle and Robert Crawford of Greene County TN. Robert died in 1795 and Isabelle died iN June of 1843. The siblings of Margaret were Alexander, William, Mary (m. Alexander McFarlane), Rebecca (m. William Guinn), and Lydia (m. Jotham Brown). I got this from that most wonderful of sources-- a Lawsuit!!!. I got much of the information from the papers filed with the lawsuit (bill of complaint, etc).Lydia sued her brother William M. Crawford (and won) over the estates of Robert, Isabella, and Alexander. I hope this helps everyone. Anyone with questions, let me know. Who was the father of Robert d 1795, Greene Co., TN ? Jan

    1. SSDI at Rootsweb
    2. Wanda R Tracy
    3. Forwarded from another mail list. sounds interesting. Wanda - Check out the SSDI data available from Rootsweb. It's updated info and includes the Post-Em feature described in the following message: POST-EMS. Now you can attach a message to any of the more than 61 million records in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) at Rootsweb by using a "post-em," developed by RootsWeb's own Randy Winch. Some suggested uses: attach notes to the records of your relatives, providing researchers with a direct link to you; add background information on an individual in the database, such as pointers to other records relating to that individual; or add a correction to an incorrect record. Check the records of individuals of interest to you often. Someone recently might have left a note there for you. To add a note to a record, do a search and click on "Post-em" at the end of a record at: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi.

    1. I'm Searchin', I'm Searchin' Every Whichaway!
    2. Lemuel Crawford was born in South Carolina in 1814. He migrated to Texas where he joined the Army of the Republic of Texas and died at the Alamo. Lemuel's name is next above David Crockett's name on the memorial in front of the Alamo. Lemuel first enlisted in the Army of the Republic of Texas in October of 1835 and got out in October of 1835, reenlisted in Feb.of 1836 and fell at the Alamo. During his first hitch he served as an artilleryman under Col. James C. Neill. When he died he was serving as an artilleryman under Capt. William R. Carey. Lemuel also took part in the siege of Bexar. Lemuel married a lady named Jane Gotcher. Janes family lived at Rabbs Creek, Tx and an area in Lee Co. Tx known as Gotcher Trace is named after them. Jane and Lemuel had one child, Mary Elizabeth Crawford. I have been unable to learn who Lemuel's parents were. I have encountered two sources which say he was the brother of Thomas Crawford, a pioneer in Angelina Co Tx. If this is true, the indication would be that his parents were Jesse Crawford and Hannah Warren Crawford. Others disagree that Jesse and Hannah were not Thomas's parents, and therefore not Lemuel's parents. If anyone anywhere has any information that might lead me to Lemuel's parents, especially someone in South Carolina, and would share it with me, I would be most appreciative. My line of Crawfords had deep roots in the East Texas area, migrating from Carolina, Ga, and Tn. Dale Crawford Houston, Tx

    1. Re: Thomas Crawford
    2. Do you have names of any other children? << I am looking for a Thomas Crawford born 1786 in Ireland, but I know he probably was in Virginia or PA. He was married to Mary Hartley. They both died in Coshocton, Ohio. They had a son George Crawford born 1825 in Coshocton County, Ohio and was married to Mariah Rakestraw. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Pat >>

    2. Andrew Crawford
    3. I have just finished "Albion's Seed; Four Brithish Forkways in America" by David Fisher. About a fourth of the book looks at the imigration from the Borderlands of North Britian in 1717-1775 to the backcountry of the US. He compares the value systems and living patterns from the Scots, English, and Northern Ireland boarders people with their experience in the US. It made sense to me and was fun to read. -- Andrew Crawford, 2785 IOE Dept., University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109 734 764-9410, Ascott Corp 734 663-2023 http://ascott.com/
