I have been searching for my husband's grandfather Henry Folca Crawford, who was born in 1812, in Virginia for several years. With a middle name like Folca, I presumed it would be simple. NOT. It also doesn't help that "OUR CRAWFORDS" liked to father children well into their 60's and 70's. Everyone always tells me that I am missing a generation, but the only evidence we have to support our dates, are very respectable marriage and birth certificates for Henry (1812) my husband's father Jacob Ray(1883) and of course my husband in 1946. We know one of Henry's sons served in the Civil War. Making my husband's ability to claim he had an uncle that served in the civil war......a rare statement I think. We were told Henry's family was extreme Methodists. We know that some of Henry's oldest children moved into Minnesota and Iowa. We know Henry's first wife was named Maria. We know that Henry's second wife, was named Sarah. I have always believed that if we could find Henry's father, we would be able to finish the rest. So much for the help of a rare name. I'm looking for one Susan Lee CRAWFORD, born 1879 in Alabama or Georgia, died 1937. She married 1898 one Madison Jefferson Strickland. Know sibs are Molly Paris married James Lee HUDSON, Eugenie married a BONNER, and Vennie. Need other sibs and parents. I have two posible sets of parents for Susan, #1 Hugh and Castity Crawford, #2 John and Emma Crawford. So I need some help. In talking about the recent thread concerning crossing the water. It doesn't hurt to do a little looking from both ends. I managed to make a connection with another sir name I was researching by doing just that. Though it make the data base a little large. My Crawford's arrived and never looked back -- making it had to find out WHERE they arrived FROM. Like ever other Crawford searcher we have RARE names like Thomas, William ect. Here's the list: Thomas B.1815 Ire. m. Jane Hanna b. Ire. m. Julia Ringer b. Pa. James b. 1837 Ire. m. Frances Smelser b. 1840 Pa. William b. 1839 Ire. m. David Andrews I know about Thomas arrived, but I can't find him on any ship manifest or any other immigration information on the family. I sure hope they didn't have to walk over!!!! I guess knowing that I'm not alone in this serch makes it easier. Sue
Thanks to all who responded to my suggestion. I would like to really see it happen. I have a lot of records from court houses and records that I have accumulated over the years. If I could just go through and type it and enter it in the proper place some of us might make a connection that could help a lot of us. I do not have enough knowledge about the computers to do any thing like this myself. I will visit all the places that have been suggested , to see what I can find and will enter any information to the sites that allow me to do so as time allows. If we did have a data base it could be in alphabetical order and would not take as long to research as going to all the different States A County and State also need to be listed in case anyone would like to get official records, and would give each of us a direction to start at. Some cemeteries have birth date, death date and some headstones havea a marriage date and then some have the place the person is born. Some of my records are hand written and would not be good for scanning. Thanks again to all and maybe we can all get somthing going. Maxine Crawford Hornaday.
I've received several emails about my ancestor .... Christopher Columbus Crawford...... ~laughing~ and yes.... I think the name is funny too....... but after all.... I also have Theophilus Goodwin I, II, and III...... and ... my god.... Pinkney Ollious Goodwin...... what names! But seriously folks........... visit my web site...... check the surnames you are looking for...... I have no clue who the parents of Christopher were or where they came from..... HELP!!!! I know that around the time of the Civil War and directly after his home was in Carroll Co. Georgia.... and he died in Fulton Co., Georgia........ my web site is Celtic Roots.... and the url is http://www.paradoxdesigns.com/celtic Katherine Southard
JaSEn: I think that is a good data base and it might be just what we all want. This would tell all names and dates and I think it might work. Jean
Boy you just made my day. Christopher Columbus Crawford . Im not laughing at your relation, but I dont believe I have heard a I Crawford with that name. He should be easy to trace. Im so sorry but he made my day. Jean I think the data base is a great idea. Ill help all I can. My sons a programer maybe he can help with the data base. Ill be glad to imput. The maillist is a great idea also. Maybe we can fine tune this. Its a big job but we need some bad input also to get us on the right track. Jean
There is such a data base, although there is some "construction" going on. http://www.cobnet.com/Crawford/ I'm sorry to say that I have been intending to enter my information since May and have not done it.:( Janet -----Original Message----- From: Maxine Hornaday <hornaday@sat-co.net> To: CRAWFORD-L@rootsweb.com <CRAWFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, October 01, 1999 4:44 PM Subject: Data base >Just a thought?? Hi Wanda I also would like to just get back across the line to Tnn from Ky to find my greatgrandfather,James Collie Crawford. Have Grandfather John Henry Crawford in Ky,but before that in Tnn I am lost.Johns and James name keep popping up but alas nothing I can use, every Crawford family must have Johns and Jameses in every generation.I have brothers James and John,so the names were still popular in 1900s.I guess in some of these large familys it was hard to find enough names to go around.Still lost after 3 years of watching internet for leads and hoping I could hitchhike on another cousins research.Did not there were so many different branches out there, but its fun. He may not be as easy to trace as you think. I found an ancestor with a really unusual name, thought he'd be easy to trace, would lead to lots of info on our family, then found a death date. He died at age 4. That's what I get for thinking. Back to Jane, Mary, James, William, etc. Judy L.
Great suggestion. Wanda could keep that up all by herself!!!! Just kidding, Wanda. I'd be happy to input my info. mimi
For all of you who have hit brick walls, try connecting to my line. I have my Crawfords traced back to first millennium Scotland and beyond. If you do find a connection and have additional information to contribute, please, let me know. (Warning: my information is not well documented. My sources tend to be old genealogical books, which everybody knows, are sometimes in error. I really do want corrections as you are able to offer.) Just a thought?? Can anyone set up a data base for all the researchers of the Crofford/ Crawfords lines , to enter the marriages, deaths, and births , Census records they have collected over the years and maybe we could all find a connection that we have not considered before. I have a list of marriages with Counties and dates and then some cemetery records that I could type off but the list would be too long to put in an email and would have to be done in parts. I am not up on setting up anything like that up. Maybe have places the info could be entered on the internet. Thanks Maxine.
Hi, I am a Linda Crawford also, just not the one who has written to the list recently. I have worked on my husband's Crawford line for 15 years and can't get past his 3rd great grandfather James Crawford born on 13 Oct 1752 in Chester Co PA according to his Rev War Pension application when he was 95 years of age living in Carter Co KY. At the time of the Rev he states that is father was living in Chester Co,but doesn't give his name. I haven't had luck chasing him down. I need to go back over everything again. There are 2 of us who have extensive research on him and we have both come to this roadblock,so if anyone has anything we would love to share. We have good records on him after he left PA. He married 1st at age 40 toe Cordelia Richards, then to Jane Llewellyn. Had 15 children by the 2 wives. I would love to get across the ocean somewhere, but there is nothing to tie us over there. The articles on the Crawfords in Scotland,Ireland and England is very interesting and I save it in hopes someday we will be able to make a connection. Thanks Linda Crawford in MO
Don't get discouraged about family research. I have been looking for the parents of my gggrandmother for over 25 years, have an idea who they are but no proof, thanks to two courthouse fires that destroyed all of the records prior to 1838. I keep finding bits and pieces, but if I find it all, there will be nothing for my grandchildren to look for. Genealogy is a work in progress, I never ever want to find it all. Then it will have to end. And what fun is that. Judy L.
