    1. Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909)
    2. A short biography from THE CRAWFORD FAMILY published by the American Genealogical Research Institute, Arlington VA. Francis Marion Crawford b.2 Aug 1854 Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany d.9 Apr 1909 Sorrento Italy. Novelist and historian. Son of Thomas and Louisa Cutler Ward Crawford. At an early age, he was sent to live with relatives in Bordentown NJ, but when his father died, he returned to Italy. He received preliminary education from a French tutor, then attended St Paul's School in Concord NH. Between ages of 14 and 24, he was a student in Rome, England, Sweden, and Germany. In 1879, he traveled to India to perfect his knowledge of Sanskrit. Finding himself in financial difficulties, he took several jobs as a journalist, for eighteen months editing the Indian herald in Allahabad. In 1881 he returned to the US to study Sanskrit at Harvard, making his home with his aunt, Julia Ward Howe. Unsure of a career interest, he soon became discontent with his activities. An uncle persuaded him to write a novel from a story Francis had encountered in India. The book, written in less than 6 weeks, was MR. JACOBS. It became the most successful book of the season and convinced Crawford he had found his profession. For the rest of his life, he wrote prolific fiction, often completing 3 books in one year. In less than 25 years, he produced over 40 novels, as well as historical and critical works. His power as a novelist resulted from his great story-telling abilities and his use of dialogue. In 1884, he married Elizabeth Berden and in 1885 the couple settled in Sorrento Italy. He died there. Hope Francis and Elizabeth have online grandchildren! Debra Claussen PS - Please don't ask me what "Sanskrit" is.... I don't have a clue!

Hoping these few lines will find you and yours in the same. I received (sic) your letter dated Sept. 18, 1814. I got a fall from a horse which hurts me a great deal, but I have god a good deal better. I have my health in a common way very well. I wish you to write to me how many children you have and each of your sisters have. John WALKER and his family are going to the Ohio. He expects to start the 29th of this month, and Sally WALKER is very weakly for a long time past. Robert MONTGOMERY's family is all well at present. I would wish you to write to me oftener than you have for some time in the past, for I never expect to see any of you again, but I wish to hear from you as often as possible. I would wish for you to inform my son Thomas that I would wish him to write to me a little oftener than he has done, for he has not written to me for some time past, and let him and his family know that I am in good health and all their friends are in good health. I shall add no more at present by I remain your loving mother until death. ---Catherine CRAWFORD To Thomas and Rachel MITCHELL." The sheet is a little larger than foolscap and very strong, and when held up to the light shows full of lines close together. In the centre can be seen the water mark; a cross and anchor. The last page is blank. The paper is folded so that the blank page is used as an envelope and contains the following address. "To Mr. Thomas MITCHELL, Green County, Kentucky." There was neither stamp no envelope. Query, did they have rural free delivery in that day? I also found a receipt dated Oct. 5, 1805, as follows: "Received of Mr. Alex JOHNSON five dollars for surveying for Thomas MITCHELL" This, evidently, was the time when Thomas MITCHELL settled on the old homestead near Camp Knox, Green county. He and his brother-in-law Thomas CRAWFORD (mentioned in the above letter) divided 1,000 acres between then which included the land south of Caney Fork, commenced at Haskinsville and extended to Dr. BOOKER's on both sides of the Columbia road and over to Blue Spring Branch, including "Motley Glenn," now Thos. POORE's, Alexander HARRIS, another brother-in-law, settles where Mr. LUNDLEY? Now lives. This family removed to Ohio in 1830. From papers found I judge it was call Freeman land? And sold ty (sic) John INGRAM for $160.

    3. I have been a member of Ancestry.com for several years and find it well worth the $59. On the other hand, some people have written to lists feeling they had been cheated. I also subscribe to their magazine Ancestry and Genealogical Computing. Everyone needs to decide what types of resources best fits their own research. I personally have several lines going back to the colonial period and Ancestry has quite a bit of material covering this period including the 1790 census information and a number of early New England town records books. The DAR lineage books are on line, and I would subscribe for use of that resource alone. However, I might not have found Ancestry very useful as I begin this endeavor. If you want access to a lot of print resources like you might have in a genealogy library, then you will probably like Ancestry. If you are just beginning searching your family history, I would recommend waiting to join pay services like Ancestry and Genealogy Library until you have examined and used many of the free resources available. I would recommend taking advantage of the free periods that are available. That will give you some hands on experience and help you to make an informed decision.
