I also have a George Washington Crawford, born about 1795 in Rutherford Co., NC, maybe son of John Crawford, married to Mary (Polly) Hunter in Rutherford Co., NC. He died in Fannin Co., GA, which was split from Union Co., Ga where he and Mary appear on the 1850 Union Co. census. His son Levi married in Union Co. in 1850/51 (would have to double check the date) and moved by 1860 to Winston Co., AL where he appears on the census with wife Biddie and several children. Levi was my 2nd great grandfather. Other children of G.W and Mary remained in Fannin Co., including another George W. George Washington was quite a popular name in that time. I also have another grandfather of that generation named George Washington Ward. Folks were quite patriotic in those days, and named their children for their heros. Ida Crawford Madison

In my revew of The Hood County (Texas) Genealogical Society Newsletter, I found some research tips that I thought were very interesting and I wanted to pass on to the list in case some of you, like myself, were not aware of what to do if you found the County Court House had burned. These suggestions were given by Loretta Burns, speaker at the October 1986 workshop in Austin Texas. "What to do when the Courthouse burned" Partial records are elswhere; some just partially burned Don't let go --check re-recorded records. Check indexes since fire. Check other buildings. Check ages on military enlistments. Check Orphan's cout records. Check higher district courts. Check adjacent County's records, especially near county line (likewise with adjoining States-WT) Check church records, especially Virginia as parish boundairies crossed county lines. Join area historical/ genealogical societies. Place ads in newspapers; send letters to librarians. Check old newspapers; funeral homes Check early county histories; census records; will banks; state archivess; WPA survey records before or after 1930's; check old boxes in the present courthouse-offer to inventory. Check early microfilms; talk to older people in small towns. Check church Seminaries. I hope these tips will gine you an idea where to search. It did me. Wanda

M. Aaland, Have you tried the following site? http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/index.html This is the Handbook of Texas and I have found some of my family in it. Try putting the first name LEMUEL in and maybe that will get something. I find that the more unusual the name is, if there is something about it in the book, it will pop right up.
