    2. Hello all. Recently my computer crashed and as a result I have lost all my information that I had for websites, and etc. Could anyone please give me the Crawford websites? I know I had two or 3 different ones but not sure what they are. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Hope you all have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Diane

    2. You can search the entire ancestry.com universe absolutely free from 12/20/1999 thru 1/4/2000. I have hit a jackpot of information on one of my lines, and just as they hoped, I am compelled to subscribe... which by the way is also being discounted right now! Have fun :-) Debra Claussen

    1. Re: Brick Wall revisited again
    2. More don't give up stories - my brick wall was solved when I found a copy of my gg grandmother's obit at the funeral home that handled her service. After 90 years they were still in business and had the records. Attached to their bill was her obit, which listed her place of birth as GA. I knew from several census records that she was born in NC as was her Crawford husband. Finally after holding on to that obit for a few years I decided to check GA marriage records, since I had not found a marriage record in NC. Guess what, I found it. And then I found that Crawford gg grandfather on the census in that same county with his parents. More research on Crawfords in that GA county led me back to the county in NC that they came from. I'm again at a brick wall, but I know that with persistence I'll get over it, under it or around it. It took me at least 5 years to get that line back to 1800. Keep trying. Even if you find something you know to be wrong, try to figure out why someone thought it was right at one time. Best wishes, and may the year 2000 bring us all closer to beating down those brick walls! Ida

    3. Don't give up searching in only 6 months; I just solved two lines I had been working on for over 5 years. And a few years ago I answered a 10 year old query I found in a set of old newsletters I had purchased, and provided a clue to a family that had been looking for more than 10 years. Often when I get really stuck, I go to work on another line. I also do research into the localities where the people lived, the families of the in-laws, neighbors, walk through area cemeteries, etc. Sometimes the clues turn up where you least expect them. Sometimes they turn up in photocopied pages I had copied several years before, just because the family name and time made me think they might come in useful some time. One family I would never had known about I learned from reading excerpts from a letter written by an 80 year old very forgetful lady (a Crawford, incidentally and granddaughter of my direct ancestor) that said she was named after Persis Stowell (had no idea who she was however). That led me back to the cemetery where a Persis Crawford and relatives were buried, right behind a family of Stowells. Later land records were able to prove the relationship. That letter incidentally was in a family file collected by a county historian. Had I not driven several hours to that historical society and spent hours reading the correspondence in that file, I would never had a clue to look for the surname Stowell. Personally I would spend more than 6 months before hiring a professional researcher. The more you know, the less you are likely to have to pay the researcher and the more things you can give that person to go on. Have you tried local historical societies and historians? Sometimes they have valuable information. Have you looked at wills, letters of administration, land records for people of the same surname in the locality you think this ancestor lived? Try also family genealogies of surnames of the in-laws. You never know what might turn up in an unexpected place. I do wish you well. 1. Brick Wall revisited again
    2. RE: Mike Webb and Johnathan William CRAWFORD Good advice from Margaret re not "Giving up" after 6 months. MY STORY ! I have a wonderful picture of my Grandmother, a portrait photo, which has the name and address of the photographer on it. After YEARS of looking at this picture, and YEARS of searching city directories re my family's living and work addresses, I had two items: one an address where my Great Aunt worked and another the address of the photographer on the photo of my Grandmother. Guess what.........One day I eventually laid them next to each other, quite by accident, (after about 10 years) and realized that my Aunt's work address was the same as that of the photographer. This coincidence led to many different "findings" regarding my family, such as: this photographer, whose life was well documented, led me to find that my Great Aunt had been a suffragette, an editor, a correspondent to the Phillipines, a writer of poetry and a photographer in her own right. Don't give up and don't stop looking at tidbits of info, some of which you may already have in front of you.....coincidences do happen ! Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season to All Chris Morrell Rochester NY

    1. Merry Christmas
    2. Cole
    3. A Genealogist's Christmas 'Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts, and with letters that said, "Too bad! The data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and such Were proof that my 'hobby' had become just too much. Our daughters were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of Barbie dolls danced in their heads; But I, at my table, was ready to drop From work on my album, with more photos to crop. Christmas was here, and such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot! Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. Though others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheer, I'd spent my time researching each birthdate and year. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A clamour outside brought me a heart-stopping fright. Away to the window I flew like a flash, I tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash. And there to my unbelieving eyes did appear An overstuffed sleigh and some outsized reindeer! Up to our rooftop those eight animals flew With that sleigh full of toys and plump Santa Claus too. A short second later I started to quake 'Cause I knew what I heard was the tiles start to break. I drew in my head- ouch!-it hit hard on the sash; Then down our cold chimney fell Santa-KER-RASH! 'Dear' Santa had come from the roof like a wreck, Tracking soot on my carpet (I could just wring his neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had NO Christmas spirit. You'd even agree! He said not a thing but went straight to his work And filled all our stockings. (I felt like a jerk- Here was Santa, bringing us gladness and joy; And I'd been too busy to buy even one toy!) THEN-he spied my research on the table all spread. "A genealogist!" he cried. (My face turned all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you." Santa grinned, As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with delight! The cover, it read: Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead. He said- as he gave me a great Santa hug, "I know what it's like for a genealogy bug. While the elves made the sleighful of toys I now carry, I did some research in the North Pole Library. This wonderful treat I'm now able to bring To genealogy folk who just can't find a thing. So, off you must go to your bed for a rest. I'll clean up for you this 'history-cal' mess." I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee And I smiled back at Santa who'd brought something-for me! As I settled in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle To those deer, who left our roof like the down of a thistle. And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family hist'ry is FUN! Merry Christmas! Good night! Christmas Day That night I slept tight in my warm little bed While ship lists and land grants danced round in my head. The morn fin'lly came and I dashed down the stair To the first floor, to stop...and then...to just stare! From the top of our tree to the toe of the mistle- My house, roof to floor, was as clean as a whistle! And sitting right there on the dining room table Were proofs for Gram's story I'd thought just a fable! And on the sideboard in a beautiful frame Was a portrait of my great-grandfather, Jacob by name! 'Side my computer, a new manual I thought I could see...? Yes! Dear Santa had brought a gen upgrade to me! On the wall above that a chart was affixed With my pedigree on it! Back to ten-sixty-six! And there, 'neath the tree, was Dear Santa's book With a gift tag that said, "Little 'Bug', take a look And see, if you may, just what you will find here: Things of all kinds from your ancestor's days! Dear 'Bug', you'll even see that I've laid in My book some of your surnames, the ones that are 'maiden'! And to show that I understand you, of course, I've included for each fact its own complete source. Last but not least," ...oh dear, the suspense is... (What I read then completely shattered my senses, For Santa's last words, written in all the right tenses:) "You'll find there the entire eighteen-ninety census!" Hours later while we relaxed round the tree, I wondered, as my daughters each tried to thank me For their Barbies, their sweaters, their stockings and such, And my spouse, for the gifts that had pleased him so much- Just how could I tell them-it's really no spoof- That Santa Claus LIVES!
