The 1940 census just came out. Once it's fully searchable, you can search for your grandmother and father in the Buffalo area and find the family, including his father. Death certs are great, as are obits, but not everyone had obits. And once you know when your father's parents were born (also on the death certs), you can search earlier censuses that will have them on it and find their families, too. I always start with census forms - it gives a nice base to build on. Good luck! You need to get death ceritficates. They should tell you hte names of parents of both your dad and his mother. The info should give the names of her parents. Vicki Cox here. I have recently had a minor breakthrough in my search for the parents of James Francis Crawford born Liverpool 1833. A newspaper posting of the wedding of James Francis to Mary Slater in Christchurch on the 24th February 1870 mentions his father, James Crawford Esq., deceased, of Claughton Park Cheshire. Wedding certificates of that time in NZ did not as in English marriage certificates require the fathers of groom and spouse to be recorded. I therefore hope that a Crawford in the Wirral/ Birkenhead area of the county of Lancashire may see this posting. Many thanks Vicki Cox.
There is lots of ways to find info. As you go along and narrow your serach, leads will come to you. Death certs are good, but obits are even better. The obits of the 1880's and early 1900's are very informative. Good luck. My family came from NY to. Tioga, Broome Counties. Terry I Stiner Robert, Albert, Merton Crawford. ________________________________ From: Char <trooper753@yahoo.com> To: CRAWFORD@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, April 14, 2012 5:38 PM Subject: [CRAWFORD] Crawford -Buffalo,NY Angola, NY area I am looking for any ties or info on my dads family. This is information that I have come across many, many years ago before I got on this listserver. While doing some cleaning and reorganizing, something rarely done, I came across this information again and am determined to get it out before it gets buried again. This information is from a cemetery, if you can call it that, that I found near the town of Dell, Arkansas. It is a mound of dirt in the middle of a cotton field on Hwy 181 - 1.1 miles North of town and about 80 to 100 yards of the road. Just for the hell of it I Googled the town and found a web site. I shouldn't be surprised anymore but I am. It appears the locals, as they say, call it Mooney Cemetery. The "locals" 20 years ago called it Old Mound or Old Indian Mound cemetery. As the stories go Indians were buried there maybe 100 years before. They even have a list of who's buried there. My grandfather's death certificate states that he is buried in Mound, Arkansas. Naturally I thought it was a town not a location and finding the name and location was by accident. So hear's the CRAWFORD but not my relative. I guessing mine could not afford a headstone. Rev. William L. Crawford born 15 Feb 1847 and died 13 Jan 1916 Wife: Lula Field Crawford born 23 Feb 1870 and died 27 Jun 1920 Good Luck! ALSO a local historian of Stoddard Co., Missouri (J.R. Brown) sent me a list of names some 11 years ago which I will get out now before it too gets reburied. The gentleman helped me locate the physical location of where my father was born, which was within a Section of old swamp land, which my dad did not even know it's location. These papers (?) were from the Bloomfield City or Vanduser, Missouri area. There maybe some mistakes in spelling as I am trying to read his handwriting. Jan. 15, 1915 - date of issue of the paper. I'm not related, but I was wondering if you could perhaps look in the Chicago newspapers for a story or an obituary? I had an ancestor who was killed by a train, and there was an article about the accident in the newspaper. Susan's death might have garnered similar attention, and you may be able to find more family information from the article. Since you believe her to be alive in 1880 (per the census), I would start looking in papers after that date. A librarian might be of great help in finding this for you!
