The obituary I mentioned came from Papers Past New Zealand. This is the James Cranston who married a New Zealander but it could be your James is his father. That would tie in as in that generation (from my perspective) there was also a Robert Cranston. This would also mean that the James Cranston you are researching was part of the Heavty Brigade but I cannot make headway with this connection.
