I have James' (1872-1919) father as being James - and there is a brother/uncle Robert...however i have James and Robert's father as being James(1816 - 1876), not Bailie or Roert as you mentioned. Cowan in 1877 in Leeds, Canada. Walter was 27 and Agnes was 20 at the time. Walter is the son of John and Sarah Cranston. Walter and Agnes later moved to Michigan and had a daughter Rachel in 1893 in Midland, Michigan. I don't have any information about Walter after that time and why they moved to Michigan and I don't have any information about John and Sarah his parents and if they came to Canada also. A census stated that Walter and was from Ireland. In the marriage announcement it stated that Walter was a farmer. I believe that Walter and Agnes had a son named John, too. I don't have any information about him. I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They may well have chosen this variant for distinction. So unless you find the person using the spelling in records, don't assume that it applies to them. I am not sure where Walter James Cranston was born other than Ireland, but I figure he was born around 1850. The wedding announcement in the Leeds and Grenville Co. newspaper in 1877 says that his parents were John and Sarah Cranston when he was 27, married Agnes A. Cowan, age 20. It said that Walter was a farmer from Ireland, Leeds. In a census in Michigan he was once called James instead of Walter. I lost track of him after that. In the 1871 Federal Census(Ontario Index), there was a John Cranston, age 64 listed. His birth place was Ireland , his religion was Church of England, Anglican , origin was Irish and Occupation was farmer in the District of Leeds South. I believe he could be Walter's father. Does any of this information make any connections to your family? Could these Cranston's be cousins. Walter and Daniel James Cranston have very close birth dates and their birth place is Ireland and they lived in Canada. I have heard that Cranston's from Ireland were rare. More Cranston's come from Scotland. I was wondering if James Cranston was John Cranston's father. I do not have any proof that he came to Canada yet. James is a name they all have in common. Good Luck,Let me know what you think Dana Snyder Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you're interested the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has a photo of Frank Mullen Cranston's headstone in the cemetery at Messine. An interesting Cranston to look up if you haven't already is James'(1872-1919) uncle uncle Robert Cranston of Edinburgh who was given the keys to the city just prior to his death in 1923. He was noted for having his first drink of alcohol at the age of 61. His father 'bailie' (sots for magistrate) Robert Cranston was a fairly high up member of the Edinburgh temperance movement.
