It also gives his father's name, John Cranston, and his mother, "Margt Phl..." The given name is certainly Margaret, but it's unclear why the surname is abbreviated; perhaps it's unreadable. But it's a start. I've been doing my family tree for several years now but have only recently started researching the Cranstons. I've found quite a few descendants back to early 1800s. Although I lived in Ireland for the first 25 years of my life (I've been in Australia since 1970) I never knew anything about this line of my father's family. His name was John Cranston Wilson. I remembered my mother telling me he was named after his mother, Fanny Cranston (1846 - abt 2002). Her father was Thomas Cranston (-1857). He was a farmer/linen trader from Moyer, Bailieborough, Co.Cavan. One of her sisters (Margaret) married a John Bartley in 1859. Quite a similar name to your Barkley. Robert's sister." You mean Robert's daughter, correct? Just want to avoid any possible confusion. Thanks for all of this great information on Robert Cranston. I found him again in the 1910 census in Ancestry listed as Robert Orensten, working as a watchman and living with his grandson Robert Crowley, brother of your great grandfather George Crowley, Jr. They are next door to Elizabeth and her second husband Peter Ewald. Interestingly he's described as "Ireland (English)". I'm guessing that's a reference to his native language, as opposed to "Ireland (Irish)" that appears elsewhere on that census page. We are probably distant cousins, as Robert's father appears to be one of the Cranston gentry descended from William Cranston who in 1664 was settled on the townland of Muntober in Kildress, 10 miles northwest of Stewartstown. The family was still around in the mid-19th century, as evidenced by this 1851 Griffith's Valuation listing of John Cranston on the same land: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/tyrone/kildress.htm This or a related John Cranston was also involved with pottery works to the south in the townland of Corr in the Parish of Killyman, three miles south of Stewartstown: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/tyrone/killyman.htm These two townlands are explicitly connected by the 1762 will of the Archdeacon John Cranston, third son of William. I believe I'm descended from William's grandson James Cranston, also named in this will, possibly of Arboe/Ardboe, four miles northeast of Stewartstown. The man I believe to be his son, my fifth-great grandfather John Cranston, immigrated to the US in 1802. My readings tell me this was the first time after the Irish Rebellion of 1798 that it was safe to travel overseas due to a lull in the Napoleonic wars, and I assume my family decided it was a good time to get out. ( this is not my family researching for a friend) In the bio of Caleb Cranston,(partial, below) Betsey's father, it states she and sister Sarah married brothers. Their spouse did both have the surname of Corey, but to me I don't see that they were brothers. This bio was written in 1880, 40-50 years after the sisters married William and Joseph Corey. Betsey's William Corey was born abt 1823 and the son of William Corey and Lucinda. They married about 1820. Sarah's husband Joseph Corey was born in 1809.. online trees(haven't fully researched) say he is the son of William Corey and Meribah Sawdy. That William did have a son William, but he married someone else.. and 23 years older than Betsey's William Corey. So I am assuming that bio is incorrect... anyone have any further info on this??? I was disappointed that the program didn't try to follow that up, so often the "celebrity" heads to Europe for additional research. Maybe they felt they had an interesting-enough program with the closure of finding Joseph's grave in Dayton. Or maybe they themselves could not make headway in Ireland. He was born Abraham Gravelstine between 1848-1851 in Ontario Canada and died in 1916 in St. Laurent, Manitoba, Canada. I am unclear as to when and why he changed his name from Gravelstine to Cranston. In the censuses from 1851,1861,1871 he was listed as Gravelstine. Beginning in 1881, he is a Cranston. Therefore, between the ages of 20-30 years old, he switched surnames and shortened his given name. I do know that his genealogy goes back from him to his father Abraham Henry Meyers Gravelstine whose parents are Abraham Gravelstine and Mary Brower. His mother was Catherine Salt or Salts.
