O.K. I think I should add a little something here that I have received from one of the Craigo Family researchers. This makes it a little bit clearer. There were 2 Robert Craigo's. A Robert Sr. and A Robert Jr. Robert Jr. lived from 1825 - 1900 and had married a Catherine Pottinger. Both of the Roberts came from Greene County, Pennsylvania to Preble County, Ohio. Robert Jr. Married Catherine Pottinger after he arrived in Preble County. O.K., Here is where the tale is told ....... Robert and Catherine had 5 children; John Lewis Craigo (Who goes by Lewis or Louis, and is often listed that way rather than by John), James Craigo,Allen Craigo,Reuben Craigo, and Huldah Craigo. It is this family that drops the "O". Specifically James, John (AKA Lewis),and Allen. They shorten their last name to Craig in order to disassociate themselves from Ruben. They also went on to say that they didn't think MY Lewis was the same as John(Lewis) because John(Lewis) lived from 1848 - 1934 and married an Ann Girton. The story passed down from one of the other Craigo/Crago researchers says:"that the name change was to disassociate from some Craigo's who were what today would be called "White Trash"." Call me stupid, but I do not know the meaning of what they are referring to as "White Trash". I understand that it is a derogatory term, and to be called this is not good. But what they meant by that, I do not know. I was wondering ....... back there where they were naming the children of Robert and Catherine .... there was a mention of a child by the name of "Huldah". I have never heard of that name before. I am assuming that it is female. (Sounds kind of similar to Hilda). Anyway, I was wondering if ....... now don't laugh at me here ..... but you don't think that by the term "White Trash" they were referring to an affair between Ruben and Huldah do you ? Hey, I don't know ...... I'm just guessing here. I'm afraid I was too embarrassed to ask for particulars, or dig any deeper into their family's skeleton's closet. I just kind of figured that it was their business and not mine. But whatever the fall out between Ruben, John(Lewis) and James was all about ..... It must have really been something bad for them to want to go changing their name. This explanation sounded more full and truthful than the hearsay and rumors that I had heard previously. Any comments from the List ????? Also, would anyone be willing to help me find/locate the 5 children that were dispersed among other families here in Preble County after the death of their father Lewis ???? I have record of which families they all got farmed out to and were living/boarding with as per the 1870 census. But after that I have nothing. It seems like they all had disappeared into thin air after that. All except for Amos. He seems to be the only one who stayed in Preble County. I'll save this info for another posting. This one is getting kind of long. I just wanted to straighten out the info on the Craigo fiasco. Doug
Hi Doug~~~As I understand it, white trash was a derogatory term used to apply to people who were, often, poor and lived in slovenly conditions, perhaps with a father who was an alcoholic or who failed to work or who did disreputable, somewhat criminal things and/or perhaps unreliable/untrustworthy things. Think people called such often had many children who were ill-fed and ill-kempt. The term has serious racist overtones and comes from a time when we believed certain people were genetically inferior and deserved to be prevented from having children and when many protestant faiths supported the idea that you could tell who was a good, god-fearing person by how financially well off they were (god's reward). anyway, maybe Rueben was a black sheep & became an alcoholic or otherwise shamed the family. I've heard the name Huldah or something akin, although I think it was Jewish. good searching, mayla@lava.net
