    1. [CRAIG-L] Fw: Location of Amboy
    2. Bud: I tend to agree with you about Amboy; it may be of Dutch origin as one person suggested. My other web queries about its location in Scotland have turned up unsuccessful as well. Do you have any further information on where John & Ursula CRAIG lived before leaving Scotland? I'm sure you also are aware that there were 2 John CRAIGs in Freehold Township, Monmouth County NJ. While it appears our ancestors arrived aboard the ship "Henry and Francis" in 1685, some contend the John CRAIG family arrived on the "Caledonia" that same year. If they did indeed arrive in America aboard the former ship, then they "sailed from the Port of Leith on September 5, 1685, having approximately two hundred people on board... Conditions were worse than at Dunottar Castle [where they had been imprisoned for their religious faith]... Three or four dead were thrown overboard every day. Notwithsatnding this raging fever, the prisoners were subjected to much cruelty by Captain Hutton and others... If they did start a worship service, Captain Hutton would throw down huge planks of timber on them, resulting in serious injuries. The Henry and Francis finally reached port in Perth Amboy in December 1685... with seventy dead." [taken from "150 Years of Ministry 1838-1988," First Presbyterian Church of Freehold, NJ, p. 12] My CRAIG line is: John (b. 1652 in ? Scotland)>> Archibald (b. 1678 in [Amboy]? Scotland)>> William (b. 1727 in Monmouth Co. NJ)>> John Jr. (b. 08 May 1762 in Freehold, Monmouth Co. NJ)>> Eleanor C. (b. 26 Jul 1801 in Butler Co. OH; m. John Hardmann THOMAS in Butler Co. OH on 11 May 1820). How does that match up with your line? Thanks also to everyone who responded to my query. Archibald is my ancestor, too. I have to probably agree with several who have suggested that the Craigs came into port at Amboy, New Jersey which is very close to Freehold. Perhaps some researchers just saw Amboy and Scotland and went with it that way. That is the only reasonable explanation I have been able to come up with. Of course, Amboy became Perth-Amboy not too awfully many years after our Craigs arrived.
