Has anyone heard of the word Amboy? One suggestion is that it means a jut of land or pennisula... or that it was a lighthouse. My ancestor, Archibald CRAIG, is said to have been born there in 1678, the 2nd child of John and Ursula CRAIG. His siblings were an older brother James and a n younger sister named Ursula. Any and all assistance is appreciated. Rich SAUM
Dear Rich, I don't know if this will help but my Rand-McNally Atlas lists the following: Amboy, Lee Co. IL Amboy, San Bernardino Co. CA Amboy, Miami Co. IN Amboy, Blue Earth Co. MN Amboy, Beaver Co. PA Amboy, Clark Co. WA Good luck, John
Rich, I know I have heard it somewhere. I lived in England for four years and I think you are on the right track with it being a descriptor for part of the land. I've heard of Perth Amboy before. It might come from one of the other U.K. countries however (Wales, Scotland, Ireland).
