I am in one of the many orphan CRAIG families. My James CRAIG was born 12 Apr 1801 in Pennsylvania, possibly in Crawford County. He is said to have been a son of John CRAIG and his wife Rachel. Nothing more is known of the parents. James, however, married Elizabeth HASTINGS on 26 Sep 1822 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and he died rather young on 27 Apr 1847 in Sheakleyville, Mercer, Pennsylvania. It seems John CRAIG appears in Sandy Creek, Mercer, Pennsylvania in Dec or 1808. His will was probated in Mercer County in 1814. We don't know how old he would have been then. One story says John was in the Revolutionary War serving under George Washington. We have seen nothing to prove that. However, we understand much of the land in western Pennsylvania was made available to veterans of the War. The only John CRAIG anyone has mentioned with a wife named Rachel was born abt. 1771 in Frederick County, Virginia, and was married to a Rachel LAHUE. He would be too young to fight in the Rev. War, but maybe it was his father who fought and later went to western Pennsylvania when John was older. This John would be old enough to be our James' father, but at this point it is still just conjecture. Anyone with anything about any of these people in their files? I would love anything to validate or even repudiate this information, just so we could know. Thanks for your time and help. Ed Scriven
