I noticed Jonathan's posting and thought I'd send him a bit of information to get him going, and then decided I would send my reply to all you Craig reserchers as well just in case any of you are interested. Below is my letter to Jonathan. Hopefully others researching the same line will respond as well. As Always....Bernice Klassen Hello Jonathan: I too have been researching William Craig! I have 5 zip disks full of information. But, I cannot make my connection between My ancestor who we know belongs to us Henricus Craig and who we believe to be his father.... Joseph William Craig. picture attached! Yes Joseph was William's son, in all the research I have done, that one fact for sure is absolutely proven. WILLIAM CRAIG MOUNTAIN MAN---TIME LINE 1807 _ Born in Greenbrier area of Augusta County, Virginia (now WestVirginia). 1825 _ Altercation at military school. Embarassed family. Left home. 1825 _ Reported to be in Missouri. 1830, 31, 32_ Trapping with Joe Meek and others. Active member of Rocky Mountain Fur Company. 1838 _ July 6 married the daughter of Nez Perce shaman and Village Head at Lapwai. His name reported to be HIN_MAH_TUTE_KE_KAIKT, Aka THUNDER STRIKES, or BIG THUNDER. Rev. Spaulding Called him JAMES. 1836 _ Settled at Brown's Hole on Green River extreme NW corner of present Idaho, and there established Fort Davey Crockett (aka Fort Misery) with others. . 1840 _ Settled on the 640_acre grant at "Lapwai Island". 1848 _ In March he was appointed Sub_Agent for Lapwai by Jack Palmer, Indian Agent for Oregon. Craig was located at Walla Walla. 1850 _ Approximate time land claim filed for 640 acres. 1855 _ June 4, 1855 filed affidavit in U. S. District Court, Clark County, Washington claiming 640 acres on Lapwai Creek. The claim states His name,, birthpace, etc.. 1857 _ Still Sub_Agent. 1857 _ In September metThomas J, Beall, Craig's biographer, at The Dalles getting supplies. 1858 _ Resigned as Sub_Agent in fall, 1858. 1859 _ First Postmaster at Walla Walla 1860 _ Moved back to his farm on Sweetwater Creek (above present Lewiston, Idaho) from Walla Walla Cultivated first farm in Idaho area. 1861 _ Established first ferry on the Clearwater River at the mouth of the Lapwai Creek. 1863 _ Craig and Newell to the first republican convention at Mount Idaho. Idaho created from Washington territory. 1868 _ William Craig died late September following a paralytic stroke 1868. Buried at Jacques Spur, Idaho. JOSEPH WILLIAM3 CRAIG (ISABEL2 PAH-TIS-SAH, JAMES1) was born 1836, and died 1882. He married MARYANNE VILES, daughter of LILY VILES. Children of JOSEPH CRAIG and MARYANNE VILES are: i. ELIZABETH GRACE4 CRAIG, b. 1889. ii. MINNIE CHRISTINA CRAIG, b. 1890; m. HAMMER. iii. HENRY CRAIG, b. 1899. iv. HANNIBAL CRAIG, b. 1894. v. IGNACE CRAIG, b. 1877. vi. ISABELLA CRAIG, b. 1880. I have 3 sets of documents from different researchers on the same line and all of Wm and Patisah's childrens names and dates differ.... this one I believe to be the closest, yet there is faults in this one as well....
