San Diego Union Tribune 12/6/00 "Lieberman asked "What will we tell our children if every vote is not counted?" "As a former teacher, I have been concerned about Joe Lieberman's question. What we should and must tell our children is that if they fail to mark the right answer on the exam, or do not fill in the entire test, they will not get credit for their answer. If they do it often enough and if they do not ask for help or read the directions properly, they will fail." "We should tell them that when they are older and move to Florida, they must fully read their ballots and remove the entire chad and no keep the nation waiting because of their mistakes. We must also tell them to read and read well, to play by the rules and expect a favorable outcome. Teaching them to make excuses for their mistakes has led to a society of victims unable to take responsibility."

The recent election was a travesty; the flag should have flown half mast at Bush's inauguration. Even if Bush was your candidate, I would hope the past election would leave a very bad taste in your mouth. While taking responsibility is important, the teacher may want to remind her students that, if they can manage to have their brother as governor, the rule about not leaving things out only applies to your opponent. In this case, the republicans went in and fixed a very large number of absentee ballots that, without their corrections, would have been invalid. You can also tell your students that the only thing that matters is winning and ignore the integrity of the process. Encourage them to ignore and ride roughshod over any injustices perpetrated so long a they win, which in this instance clearly meant far more than the fairness of the process or any determination if the results were accurate. I received an e-mail a month or so ago, noting that if this was a third world country and we learned that, of the two presidential candidates, the one who did not win thepopular vote was declared the winner and that even that win was dependent on a clearly flawed vote from the province where his brother was the governor and further, his father was an ex-presidente and former head of the secret police, we would be wondering whether we should send troops in to encourage democrary. I don't think it matters who you support---the american system was badly and tragically perverted and the long earned credibility and neutrality of the supreme court was destroyed when the engaged in political paybacks based upon convoluted logic (which for a number of Justices was directly contradictory to their state's rights stance on other issues).
