Hi I am researching a Craig family who I have traced back to Beith in the early 1800s, before moving to Paisley, Greenock, Port Glasgow & Inverkip. James Craig was born in Beith c1806. There were 3 James Craigs born in Beith within a few years of each other & as his age varies slightly from census to census I have not yet discovered which one this particular Craig line descends from: 12.1.1800, son of Robert Craig & Ann Kenneday 23.1.1803, son of James Craig & Margaret Love 17.2.1805, son of James Craig & Janet Hunter On 24.11.1824 in Beith he married Isabella WHITEFORD, the daughter of James & Janet (THOMSON) Whiteford, who was baptised in Beith on 5.5.1805. James (35) & Isabella (27) Craig had the following children: Janet (bap.14.8.1825), James (b.9.11.1827), Robert (bap.14.2.1830), Margaret (b.c1832), William (bap.14.6.1835), Jean (bap.11.6.1837), Isabella (b.c1840), John (born c1843) and Hugh (born c1846). The family lived at 83 Bunswynd, Beith. John (b.c1843) married Janet GEMMELL on 3.7.1873 in Paisley. Janet was the daughter of John and Margaret Gemmell (nee COCHRAN), born 9.3.1843 in the parish of Beith. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Greenock, where their children were born: Robert (b.c1873), Margaret (b.c1874), Isabella (b.c1877), James (b.c1878), John (b.c1881), and Janet (b.c1888). James Craig (b.c1878) married Lizzie MCBRIDE on 31.10.1901 in Greenock. Lizzie was the daughter of John McBride (labourer) and Sarah (nee MCGHEE), a couple who’d moved to Greenock from County Antrim. They had eight children: Sarah McGhee (b 1902), James, Cissy, Robert, John, Ella, Sandy (Alexander), Jenny (Janet), & Hugh (b.1922). Hugh Craig was born at 59 Ardgowan Street in Port Glasgow. On 11th August 1923, James Craig, then aged 42, set sail from Liverpool for Halifax, Canada on the Cunard ship ‘Caronia’ to work as a harvester. We think he may have remained in Canada. When Hugh gave Lizzie’s name as his next of kin in 1942, she was living in Ardgowan Place, Inverkip. Ardgowan Place is in Main Road, Inverkip. Hugh moved to Liverpool. Jenny ran a Post Office in Thames Ditton. We believe that James or John & Robert moved to Kent. If anyone else is researching the same family, we would love to hear from you! Kind regards Liz Jones
