We were contacted by Volena Cofer's niece in August 2003, who put us in touch with Volena and her daughter Wanda Lilligren. Volena had married a gentleman named Swofford (now deceased), and still lived in Springfield, OR (near Eugene), near the site of the former Mohawk school where the quilt was made. We attended a meeting of the local historical society, where we gave a talk on the quilt, and the story of tracking down its history. After the presentation, Volena had the quilt on her lap for the rest of the meeting, and people came up to view it more closely. We met a sister of another of the original quilter's there. Her sister was deceased, but she was glad to see the quilt and her sister's block. Many of the attendees had attended or had family members or friends at Mohawk, and reminiscences were given. Volena was going in for an operation shortly after, so we left the quilt with her for "good luck". (She came through well, and is now recovered.) Her daughter later purchased the quilt for her as a surprise gift, and Volena will be leaving it as an heirloom for the family.
